Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s Hulog Ka ng Langit Press Conference

Regine Velasquez-Alcasid

Motherhood has Regine Velasquez-Alcasid toning it down, holding back the vocal pyrotechnics and opting to showcase a more tender side in her latest album, Hulog Ka ng Langit, released by Universal Records.

The hefty album containing 17 tracks is mostly made up of songs that are mainly dedicated to Regine’s son, Nate, felt most in the lead single, Hulog Ka ng Langit. But the songs in the album can also extend beyond the love of mothers to children to that of the love between couples as well. Nate himself makes a few cameo appearances throughout the album, from banging the piano keyboards right at the beginning, to saying goodnight at the end, immortalizing his earliest years on record.

Regine exhibits a great deal of restraint for most of the tracks notably in Rainbow Connection, Tomorrow, Someone’s Waiting for You, The One Real Thing and Happiness. It’s very mellow and laidback as if she’s singing lullabies to put little Nate to sleep. But there are instances wherein she steps it up a notch and reminds people that she’s one of the most amazing belters in the land with the tracks Araw, Ulap, Langit, New Born, and Sa’yo Na Lang Ako.

Husband Ogie Alcasid makes a guest appearance in a duet of Just the Way You Are originally recorded by Bruno Mars. Regine acted as one of the judges during the Philippine Popular Music Festival 2013 and two songs from the competition, Araw, Ulap, Langit and Sa’yo Na Lang Ako are included in this album. She puts her own spin in these two songs by letting her vocals soar towards the end.

Even though Regine primarily dedicated this album to her son, she also has dedicated it to her father, Gerardo Velasquez, fondly known as Mang Gerry, who passed away last February. And with his departure, the Christmas song Hele ni Inay has become the most moving track for me. Even though it’s a song longing for a mother instead of a father, it doesn’t take away from the poignancy and relevance of this song and I can only imagine how emotional Regine will be if she decides to sing this live come Christmas time.

Overall, Regine has put out an extremely personal album with songs that mean a lot to her and loved ones. The title track Hulog Ka ng Langit is Regine’s way of telling that her son was a blessing from heaven. Regine, along with her record label Universal Records believed that blessings are meant to be shared hence the release of this album. Other tracks in the album include Amazing, My Child, Tomorrow, Nathaniel (Gift of God), You, You Got It and God Gave Me You.

Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s latest album Hulog Ka ng Langit, released by Universal Records, is now available at record stores nationwide. The title track Hulog Ka ng Langit and the rest of the tracks are available in digital format at MyMusicStorePhilippines and iTunes.

Cultural Center of the Philippines launches Center for Choral Performance

The Philippine Madrigal Singers and Madz et al. member choirs

The Cultural Center of the Philippines recently announced the establishment of the Center for Choral Performance, bringing together the various choir programs of the CCP. Under the helm of CCP’s resident company, the Philippine Madrigal Singers and its choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio, the Center for Choral Performance’s choral music program offers workshops for choirs and choral conductors, presents choral music performances and also stages an international choral festival.

The CCP has various choral music events lined up this year. First up is the Madz et al. Choral Festival entitled Think happening on April 1-6, 2014 at the CCP Little Theater which is in celebration of the Madz et al.’s 30th year. Coming on June 28 & 29, 2014 is the Philippine Madrigal Singers’ 50th Anniversary Closing Concert. After their European tour happening this May to June 2014, the Madz returns home and caps their 50th year with a special concert that will also feature the Sing Philippines Choir made up of selected singers representing each region of the Philippines.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers

The CCP Hands-on Choral Workshop will also resume this year on October 21-25, 2014. After an absence of two years, due to the Madz busy touring schedule, the annual choral workshop at the CCP gets back on track. This training program gathers choirs and conductors from different parts of the country and they undergo an intensive five day training program in choral singing, conducting and performance. The workshop culminates in a choral performance by the participants at the CCP Main Theater on the final day.

And on July 21-25, 2015, the 2nd edition of the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival will take place. This follows the successful inaugural competition wherein choirs from different parts of the world competed in the folk, vocal ensemble and chamber choir categories. The competition back in 2013 marked the first international choral competition in the country.

Choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio

The Center for Choral Performance is an addition to the facility based schools at the CCP Conservatory that includes Tanghalang Pilipino’s Actors’ Company, the CCP Dance School, the recently held New York-Manila Musical Theater Workshop and the various masterclasses conducted by visiting artists.

French Electro act Superpoze opens FrancoPhil 2014

March 21, 2014, 10:00 PM
Black Market,
5 La Fuerza Compound,
Sabio St. cor Don Chino Roces Ave.,
Makati

Manila gets a taste of the French electro scene with Superpoze, the first performer in a series of French cultural events lined-up for 2014.

Superpoze is a composer and beatmaker praised by audiences in many festivals in Europe such as les Vieilles Charrues, Festival de Montreux, and les Transmusicales.

With his pads and keyboards, Superpoze flaunts an innate sense of melody and down tempo rhythmics and gives another dimension to electronic music, drawing inspiration and sounds from jazz to hip-hop. Barely in his twenties, Superpoze’s trademark is a well-crafted alloy of harmonious chords, jerky vocal loops, beats and basses. Among his list of achievements is an EP, the foundation of his label under Combien Mille Records, and countless concerts around the world.

Superpoze

As part of his South American and Asian tour, Superpoze will perform in Manila with Don P, Red-I, and Soulflower as the first in a series of events lined-up for FrancoPhil, the annual French-Philippine cultural program in Manila. Following the success of its last 3 editions, this year’s program offers a range of acts for all types of audiences.

The Pockemon Crew pays tribute to cinema and the origins of hip-hop in New York during the 1940s through an electrifying dance performance on May 28. Speaking of cinema, the highly anticipated French Film Festival returns in June to continue its almost two decades long reputation of bringing the best of French cinema to Filipino audiences.

With more than 13,000 attendees last year, FrancoPhil makes Fête de la Musique 2014 twice as big with musical acts playing at two different stages: one at the A-venue Open Parking Area in Makati and another at the Plaza Maestranza in Intramuros, Manila.

Classical music lovers will be treated to a concert by Quatuor Parisii String Quartet on June 10 while young (and old) audiences will enjoy the comic and acrobatic antics of the Tête d’enfant Modern Circus Company in October.

As the first event of FrancoPhil, Superpoze brings French electro beats to Manila on March 21, 10:00 PM at the Black Market, 5 La Fuerza Compound, Sabio St. cor Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

Superpoze Live is organized by the Alliance française de Manille and the Embassy of France, with the support of Rustan’s, Stores Specialists, Inc., Black Market, and Deezer.

Sam Concepcion set to shatter limitations in comeback concert

March 15, 2014, 7:00 PM
Music Museum
Greenhills Shopping Center
San Juan

Singer/actor Sam Concepcion taps into the power of youth as he embarks a return to the concert stage with No Limitations happening this March 15, 2014, 7:00 PM at the Music Museum in San Juan.

Sam Concepcion

Produced by Hills & Dreams Events Concepts Co. and line produced by STAGES, No Limitations is a unique endeavor as it has assembled a relatively young and yet promising team for this concert: stage director Paolo Valenciano who has earned raves for his directorial stint with Sponge Cola’s Maximum Capacity and his dad, Gary V’s On Higher Ground, choreographer Kevin Intal and the La Salle Dance Company-Street aiming to showcase Sam’s peerless dancing skills, and musical director Marvin Querido.

Sam announced during the concert’s press conference that KZ Tandingan and Tippy Dos Santos will be joining him on stage but he has remained tight lipped when asked about who else might make an appearance on that night. With Tippy on board, fans can expect the two to perform Panalangin from I Do Bidoo Bidoo and Dati, the winning song from the 2013 Philippine Popular Music Festival which was also a breakout hit from last year. These two tunes join No Limitations and Mahal Na Mahal, which are Sam’s latest hits that came out from his current album Infinite.

And as an ultimate teaser, Sam said that there will be a big announcement at the concert itself. I remain clueless as to what nature this announcement could be but it’s something that Sam’s fans have to see for themselves at the concert.
