Disney’s Beauty and the Beast ushers in the 2015 theater season as the musical welcomes its guests at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) this January 9-25, 2015.

The musical, based on the 1991 Academy Award winning animated feature film, has reached a milestone recently turning 20 year olds and is now embarked on an international tour that already finished its runs in Istanbul (Turkey), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Thessalonik (Greece), Trieste, and Milan (Italy). After its Manila run, the musical heads over to Bangkok (Thailand), Singapore, Jakarta (Indonesia), Kazakhstan, and will cap the tour in Macau.

While some people look forward in seeing the spectacular sets and costumes in this touring production, my ears will be anticipating to hear live the songs Belle, Be Our Guest, Gaston and the title song Beauty and the Beast with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman. The musical also features new music not in the animated film like the narcissistic Me sung by Gaston (who else?) and Belle’s new solo numbers Home and A Change in Me. In the animated film, the Beast rarely sung at all but in the musical, he sings what I think the most stirring song in the entire show which is If I Can’t Love Her. Those who had seen the restored special edition of the film released in 2002 will also be able to see the stage version of the song Human Again which was cut from the original release due to time constraints. These additional songs were by Menken with lyrics by Tim Rice. The book is written by Linda Woolverton.

The leads in this production are Hilary Maiberger as Belle and Daniel Pead as the Beast. Joining them are Hassan Nazari-Robati as Lumiere, James May as Cogsworth, Alan Dietlein as Gaston, Emily Mattheson as Mrs. Potts, Paul Crane as Maurice, Jordan Aragon as Lefou, and Charlie Jones and William Poon alternating as Chip. Susan Egan and Terrence Mann originated the roles of Belle and the Beast respectively back in 1994.

The original Broadway creative team reuniting for this tour is led by director Rob Roth and choreographer Matt West, with Costume Design by Ann Hould-Ward, Lighting Design by Natasha Katz, Scenic Design by Stanley A. Meyer, Sound Design by John Petrafesa Jr. and Music Supervision by Michael Kosarin

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, Inc., NETworks, Broadway Entertainment Group, MKFAE and Ovation Productions and supported by GLOBE BUSINESS, VISA, FOX International Channels, DIAMOND HOTEL, the Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, and BusinessWorld.
