Studio Connections International, the newest kid on the block to grace the country’s booming theater scene presented its initial offering PETA’s Haring Lear during the company’s launch at the Hotel Benilde Maison De La Salle.

The company has its roots Arizona, USA as a school based theater company founded back in 2002 by Robert Encila, a theater and music teacher. Studio Connections started out for kids and teens focusing more on theater as well as the visual arts. A turning point for Encila and the company came when he met film, television and stage actor Bernardo Bernardo during the latter’s birthday celebration in early 2014. Encila expressed his idea of partnering with Bernardo, who has been based in the US for the past 12 years, to bring Studio Connections to the Philippines and set up home there. Encila admitted that the idea back then was actually more of a fantasy. But almost exactly a year later, the fantasy has turned into reality as Studio Connections International is formally launched with Encila as the Vice President for Talent Development and Bernardo as the President and Artistic Director.

One thing Encila stressed about this new company is its aim to have a strong educational component. By the summer of 2015, the company will conduct a summer camp for voice, acting and technical theater. And this educational component is felt through the company’s partnership with the School of Design and Arts De La Salle-College of St. Benilde for its initial presentation of PETA’s Haring Lear on February 27-March 8, 2015 at the SDA Theater.

PETA’s Haring Lear is the Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, written by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera and restaged by Nonon Padilla featuring an all male cast headed by Bernardo Bernardo in the title role. Joining Bernardo are cast members namely Salvador Caramat, George de Jesus, Abner Delina, Renante Bustamante, Jeffrey Hernandez, Garry Lim, Lambert de Jesus, Niccolo Dans, Russel Legaspi, Roi Calilong, Rhenwyn Gabalonzo, Jason Barcial, and Jess Evardone.

Originally staged by the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) back in 2012, Haring Lear tells the story of King Lear as he bequeaths his kingdom to his three daughters only to be betrayed by two of them. The post apocalyptic setting of this production is brought to life by Gino Gonzales who took over the reins from his mentor Salvador Bernal who passed away on October 2011. Studio Connections International will present the abridged version that was staged to critical acclaim at the Kuandu Arts Festival in Taiwan last October 2014.

PETA’s Haring Lear will run on the weekends of February 27-March 8, 2015 with evening shows at 7:30 PM during Fridays and Saturdays and matinees at 2:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The play opens with a Celebrity Night Premiere on February 27, 2015 at 7:30 PM.
