Just a few weeks after the success of Walang Sugat, Tanghalang Pilipino’s initial offering for their 26th Season tackling the theme of Truth and Consequence, comes Walang Kukurap, from the tandem of playwright Layeta Bucoy and director Tuxqs Rutaquio who also brought to the stage the disturbing and shocking Titus Andronicus by Dulaang UP. Walang Kukurap will be staged from September 14, 2012 up to October 7, 2012 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Huseng Batute (CCP Studio Theater). Digging the rotten underbelly of politics, Walang Kukurap explores a staple in Philippine politics namely political dynasties. The play will tell the story of five families all aiming for public office, but with different intentions (noble and shady ones and everything else in between).

Marco Viaña and Remus Villanueva perform an excerpt

A press conference was held recently at the Aristocrat Restaurant where some of the cast and creative staff of Walang Kukurap presented excerpts and answered questions from members of the media who were present. Director Tuxqs Rutaquio said that while Titus Andronicus delved into getting to the source of violence, Walang Kukurap explores the dynamic of politics through political dynasties. But there will still be violence here and members of the audience are expected to be at the edge of their seats and be always on their guard. If one momentarily falters and loses sight of what’s happening, he or she will definitely miss something. Hence, walang kukurap trans. no one blinks.

Playwright Layeta Bucoy also recalled her inspiration for writing the play which was a political blog by Christopher Bonoan that pointed out Article 11 Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution regarding the accountability of officers. “Public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must, at all times, be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency; act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.” But the sad fact in our country is that in many cases, public office is treated by officials as their own private trust fund. And political dynasties only serve to keep that private trust fund in their own hands.

The cast of Walang Kukurap

Walang Kukurap features veteran actors and actresses led by Suzette Ranillo, Sherry Lara, Mymy Davao, Crispin Pineda, Peewee O’Hara, Lou Veloso, Paulo Cabañero Ding Navasero, Nonoy Froilan, Nar Cabico and Delphine Buencamino. Alongside the veterans are TP’s stable of actors from the Actors Company composed of Jonathan Tadioan, Marco Viaña, Regina de Vera, Nicolo Magno, Ralph Mateo, Remus Villanueva, Doray Dayao, April Joy Iñigo and Jovanni Cadag. One exciting highlight (especially for a music lover like me) is the special participation of Gloc-9 on special dates during the play’s run.
