The next season concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra happening this February 17, 2012, 8:00 PM is going to be a different experience. First of all, the venue will be the Philam Life Auditorium since the orchestra’s usual performing space, the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) is already booked by Mamma Mia on that night. Adding more to the different experience is the guest conductor, British James Judd and violinist Vesa-Matti Leppänen from Finland. Both artists are associated with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since Judd is the NZSO’s Music Director Emeritus while Leppänen is the concertmaster of the said orchestra.

While many things are different, one thing remains the same: I’ll be watching for sure. And the programme prepared for this evening is also no different from me as it consists of very familiar concert fare: Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 and Felix Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 also known as the Italian Symphony. Remarkably, this concert entitled James Judd and the Italian Symphony is the first one of this PPO season wherein all of the pieces to be performed are very well known to me.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

It will be very interesting to hear the PPO perform at the Philam Life Auditorium since this auditorium has excellent acoustics. Also, I’ve never heard the PPO play at this venue before and I am already looking forward to hear how the resulting sound will be. But this venue’s seating capacity is far less compared to the CCP Main Theater which means that securing seats should not be left at the last minute as well or one might regret not being able to see this unique PPO experience.
