February is indeed a month filled with lots of concerts and one has to make that hard decision which ones to watch. It was not hard at all for me to mark my calendar on February 18, 2012, 8:00 PM to watch the Manila Symphony Orchestra in Jazz Meets Classical at the Francisco Santiago Hall at the BDO Center. I’ve first heard about this concert months ago when the Embassy of Israel told me that an Israeli conductor will be doing a concert with the MSO on February the following year. And some time later, I found out that they were actually referring to Yaron Gottfried, who is also a composer and a jazz pianist and that he will be bringing along two other Israeli musicians, Yonatan Oleiski (drums) and Tal Gamlieli (bass) for this concert. All of this meant that there is no way that I am going to miss this concert.

Composer, conductor, pianist Yaron Gottfried

This opening concert of the MSO Season 2012 Gala Concert Series, dubbed as Live Life with Music, will feature performances of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel). These two pieces are very familiar to me and I don’t mind hearing them again. But the performance that I am really looking forward to in this concert has got to be Yaron Gottfried’s Capriol Jazz Suite for Jazz Trio and Orchestra with the composer himself conducting and playing the piano. I’ve seen a video of this piece but watching a live performance always trumps a watching a video. And I’ve always wanted to see a performance of a contemporary piece for quite some time now. I am just glad that it is really going to happen this time around.

There is no doubt that I’ll be watching this one and all that’s left for me to do is hope for good weather, my health not failing me and finally deciding what to wear that night. I’ve almost complained that I’ve been watching more plays than orchestra/music performances and now they are back big time. And expect me to be there. See you at the concerts!
