Lined-up are nine films that
participated in last year’s 74th
Venice International Film Festival namely Novecento/1900, Il deserto
rosso/Red Desert, Gatta
Cenerentola/Cinderella the Cat, Ammore
e malavita/Love and Bullets, Il colore
nascosto delle cose/Emma, Una
famiglia/A Family, Brutti e cattivi/Ugly
Nasty People, Hannah and The Leisure Seeker.
To be launched in this edition of
the film festival is the educational component where three Italian film experts, namely Franco Eco (A.C.M.F.), cinematographer Davide Mancori (A.I.C.- I.M.A.G.O), and VFX designer Paolo Bertola, holding a series of masterclasses at the Film Institute in UP Diliman, the
School of Design and Arts at DLSU- College of Saint Benilde (Digital Filmmaking
program) and the Cinematheque Centre Manila at the Film Development Council of the
Philippines. A production tour is also being organized with an Italian
independent producer visiting six local production houses with the intent of
exploring possible cooperation and strengthening of the Philippine-Italian film
industry ties.
Tickets to the screenings
are priced at P150 each. Students can avail of the discounted price of P100 per
screening. As expected from various foreign language film festivals throughout the years, the films will be shown with English subtitles.
2nd Italian Cinema from Venice to Manila Line-Up
Novecento/1900 (1976)
Director: Bernardo Bertolucci
Starring: Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu
This expansive period drama
follows two childhood friends in northern Italy during the early 20th
century. Alfredo Berlinghieri and Olmo Dalcò grow up as close companions
despite their class differences. However, they drift apart as adults, Alfredo
embracing his landowning heritage and Olmo championing workers' rights. As the
years go by, they see the rise of fascism in their country, and eventually
their values find them directly in conflict.
Il deserto rosso/Red Desert (1964)
Director: Michelangelo Antonioni
Starring: Monica Vitti, Richard
Harris
Amid the modern wastelands and
toxic factories of Italy, wife and mother Giuliana (Monica Vitti) desperately
tries to conceal her tenuous grip on reality from those around her, especially
her successful yet neglectful husband, Ugo (Carlo Chionetti). Ugo's old pal,
Corrado (Richard Harris), shows up in town on a business trip and is more
sensitive to Giuliana's anxieties. They begin an affair, but it does little to
quell Giuliana's existential fears, and her mental state rapidly deteriorates.
Gatta Cenerentola/Cinderella the Cat (2017)

Cenerentola tries to escape from
the evil schemes of her stepmother and stepsisters while living aboard the
Megaride, a ship stuck in the port of Naples.
Ammore e malavita/Love and Bullets (2017)
Director: Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti

Serena Rossi, Claudia Gerini, Carlo Buccirosso, Raiz
A dramatic love story. Shoot
outs, wild motorbike chases and speedboat escapes. Set in the beautiful Bay of
Naples, the film is not only an action thriller but also a romantic comedy with
music that ranges from Neapolitan songs to rap.
Il colore nascosto delle cose/Emma (2017)
Director: Silvio Soldini

Teo is a creative in a trendy ad
agency. Nice and charming he enjoys life as an elusive womanizer. Emma is blind
since the age of 16 but that has not stopped her from becoming an osteopath.
She is pretty, vibrant and has great friends. When they first meet, Teo is
mesmerized by her sexy voice. Intrigued and attracted by her as he has never
been with a blind woman, he takes her on a date. Emma is too smart and sharp to
give into the illusion but against all odds it’s Teo who is hooked.
Una famiglia/A Family (2017)

At first sight, Vincent and Maria
may look like any other couple. He is protective, she is passionate. But who
knows what happens behind closed doors? For years, Maria has been too

no longer be Vincent’s accomplice, their secret life-project threatens to get
out of control.
Brutti e cattivi/Ugly Nasty People (2017)

Anna and Claudio are pushing back
the decision to have a baby until the time they will be better off. He launches
a crowdfunding to develop a website to evaluate freelance professionals, but
nobody seems to care. One night, drunk, they post a video on their crowdfunding
page challenging the "people of the Net" to offer a donation in
exchange for a video clip of them having sex…
Hannah (2017)

Intimate portrait of a woman
drifting between reality and denial when she is left alone to grapple with the

The Leisure Seeker (2017)

Sutherland
A runaway couple goes on an
unforgettable journey in the faithful old RV they call The Leisure Seeker, travelling
from Boston to The Ernest Hemingway Home in Key West. They recapture their
passion for life and their love for each other on a road trip that provides
revelation and surprise right up to the very end.
