The MCO Foundation's Young Artists Series 2014 ends with a performance of one of the most promising young clarinetists today, Andrew Constantino on October 8, 2014 at 7:00 PM at the Ayala Museum in Makati.

Clarinetist Andrew Constantino first drew the attention of world renowned clarinetist Marcel Luxen in his masterclass two years ago. Luxen noted, "Andrew is a talent to watch out for, a major talent in the making".

Andrew started his first clarinet lessons at a young age of nine under his father, Ariel Constantino and become a member of his grandfather's band, Imus Youth Symphonic Band. At 12, he was accepted as a music scholar under the tutelage of Prof. Ariel Sta. Ana at the Philippine High School for the Arts.

Singaporean conductor Darrell Ang performs in Manila

July 11, 2014, 8:00 PM
Tektite Tower Auditorium
Phil. Stock Exchange
Ortigas Center, Pasig

Featuring:
Arthur Espiritu, tenor
Christine Coyiuto, piano
Manila Symphony Orchestra
Darrell Ang, conductor

Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
     Misero! O sogno, o son desto?, K.431
Se vuoi che te raccolgano from Il sogno di Scipione, K.126
Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K.488
Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 Eroica

I first heard about Darrell Ang coming here way back in early or mid-2012 to conduct an all Wagner concert. Things happened and the concert pushed through but with a different conductor. And the idea of Darrell Ang ever coming here got pushed at the back of my mind. That was until I was told earlier this year that he is indeed coming, now for sure, to conduct a Mostly Mozart concert.

Born in Singapore, Darrell is currently the music director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne in France. Prior to this, he was the Young Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for five years. I’ve never seen him conduct personally before but I was able to see video of him conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE. And I had to watch the video again to pump me up for the concert happening on July 11, 2014, 8:00 PM at the Tektite Tower Auditorium at the Philippine Stock Exchange in Ortigas, Pasig.

Joining Darrell for the Mostly Mozart 2014 concert is the Manila Symphony Orchestra, tenor Arthur Espiritu and pianist Christine Coyiuto. The pieces to be played include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s concert aria Misero! O sogno, o son desto?, K.431, the rarely performed Se vuoi che te raccolgano from Il sogno di Scipione, K.126, Piano Concerto no. 23 in A major, K.488 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 Eroica, the epic symphony that changed music forever.

RAd and Darrell Ang

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Darrell during an intimate lunch with a few members of the press. I was able to ask him his thoughts about where the music of the 21st century is headed. He said that there are many composers now, especially in Europe, who are creating new works. Darrell thinks that the contemporary composers who will be celebrated decades or centuries from now include the American John Adams, the Chinese Tan Dun and the British Harrison Birtwistle.

Darrell, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, has recently released a recording of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Overtures and Entr’actes for Naxos Records. Naxos is also set to release his recording of Zhou Long’s works.

Sorry Darrell, but I'm no Lang Lang!

Mostly Mozart 2014 featuring Darrell Ang, Arthur Espiritu, Christine Coyiuto, and the Manila Symphony Orchestra is presented by the MCO Foundation as part of the Great Performances Series of their 29th  Season.

An Evening of Bel Canto

Tenor Arthur Espiritu

Featuring:
Arthur Espiritu, tenor
Elainne Vibal, soprano
Myramae Meneses, soprano
Stephanie Aguilar, soprano
Najib Ismail, piano

Programme:
George Frideric Handel Tornami a vagheggiar from Alcina
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ruhe Sanft from Zaide
Gioachino Rossini
Ah come mai non senti from Otello
     Sombre forêt from William Tell
Vincenzo Bellini
Qui la Voce from I Puritani
Vieni, vieni  fra questa from I Puritani
Prendi, l’anel ti dono from La Sonnambula
Si, fuggire a noi non resta... Ah, crudel, d'onor ragioni from I Capuletti e i Montecchi
Gaetano Donizetti
Quel guardo, il cavaliere from Don Pasquale
Tornami a dir che m’ami from Don Pasquale
Chacun le sait from La Fille du Regiment
Ah! Mes amis from La Fille du Regiment

Bel canto, or beautiful singing in English, is a term that I often encounter whenever I dabble into the world of opera. But being the opera newbie that I still am, my idea about bel canto is still somewhat vague and I still couldn’t say if a certain aria was sung bel canto or not. Thankfully, the MCO Foundation, together with the Ayala Museum, came up with the concert, An Evening of Bel Canto that served as a great way for me to familiarize myself with this singing style.

Performers during this evening were Arthur Espiritu, possibly the most celebrated Filipino tenor today and promising young sopranos Elainne Vibal, Myramae Meneses, and Stephanie Aguilar. Accompanied by pianist Najib Ismael, they performed arias that are rarely heard during concerts in here. The MCO Foundation felt that it was time to steer away from the usual arias, offer something new and also have Arthur Espiritu tackle some challenging material.

I learned that bel canto may be an Italian term but it’s application isn’t limited to operas from Italy or in the Italian language, or by Italian composers. The opening number, Elainne Vibal’s Tornami a vagheggiar from Alcina was by George Frideric Handel who was born in Germany but flourished in Britain during the Baroque era. Ruhe Sanft, performed by Stephanie Aguilar, from the unfinished opera Zaide by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was in German. And the final couple of numbers from Gaetano Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment were in French. I initially thought that bel canto came to be during the Romantic period but based on the two opening numbers, it seemed that bel canto already existed during the Baroque and Classical period.

Honestly, the unfamiliar program, taken out of context, meant that the meaning of the songs were lost in me. But I was able to relish the various tones, textures and colors of the sopranos especially Myramae Meneses who stood out with her solo Quel guardo, il cavaliere from Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti. I felt bad for missing her solo concert a while back and I was pleased to be able to have another chance to hear her again.

The most highly anticipated part of the concert was the last song, Ah! Mes amis from Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment in which Arthur Espiritu was awaited to hit the nine high C’s of this very challenging piece. During that night, I heard that Arthur was struggling with colds (not surprising considering the freaky weather at the time) but despite some barely noticeable strain, he was able to hit those C’s. After this number, he humorously let out a huge sigh of relief while basking in the applause of a very appreciative audience.

Arthur along with Elainne Vibal, Myramae Meneses, and Stephanie Aguilar then sang an encore, Libiamo ne' lieti calici from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, which he explained is not bel canto. Several members of the audience at the back joined in as the chorus giving this number a sort of surround audio experience.

An Evening of Bel Canto was made possible in partnership with the Ayala MuseumBusinessWorld, HighLife, 98.7 DZFE The Master’s Touch and Lyric Piano and Organ.

Arthur Espiritu leads an evening of bel canto vocal music at the Ayala Museum

October 26, 20137:00 PM
Ayala Museum
Makati Avenue corner De La Rosa Street
Greenbelt ParkMakati

Featuring:
Arthur Espiritu, tenor
Elainne Vibal, soprano
Myramae Meneses, soprano
Stephanie Aguilar, soprano
Najib Ismail, piano

Internationally acclaimed tenor Arthur Espiritu headlines the MCO Foundation’s An Evening of Bel Canto, a special concert highlighting the art of beautiful singing this October 26, 2013, 7:00 PM at the Ayala Museum.

Arthur Espiritu, considered as the country's premiere tenor today, holds the distinction as being the only Filipino to have sung at the prestigious Teatroalla Scala along with other major opera houses in the world. He has also won the Belvedere Vocal Competition in Vienna. Joining him in this evening are sopranos Elainne Vibal, Myramae Meneses and Stephanie Aguilar. Vibal is a winner at the Jovita Fuentes Vocal Competition, while Meneses won the top prize at the National Competition for Young Artists. Aguilar on the other hand was last year’s third prize winner of the Jovita Fuentes Vocal Competition. Accompanying the vocalists is Najib Ismail, one of the most sought after collaborating pianists in the country.

Tenor Arthur Espiritu

The press release says that bel canto which means beautiful singing in Italian is a vocal fad made popular during the late 17th century that requires singers to possess incredible virtuosic vocal technique and impeccable musicality. Composers such as Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti wrote music with limpid melodic lines that would encompass a singer's whole vocal range with a lot of ornate embellishments. Operas like I Puritani, La SonnambulaNorma, Lucia di Lammermoor are some of the well-known bel canto opera. The concert will include some of the most challenging and rarely performed arias and scenes from great operas like the duet from Bellini’s I Puritani, Rossini’s Semiramide and Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment.

I still consider myself as an opera newbie who still has very limited knowledge of the vast opera works out there. And I admit that I’ve yet to hear any of the music from majority of the works listed above but I welcome the opportunity to learn more through this concert. Supertitles/surtitles will be projected during this concert for those who want to understand what is being sung.

An Evening of Bel Canto is made possible in partnership with the Ayala MuseumBusinessWorld, HighLife, DZFE.FM The Master’s Touch and Lyric Piano and Organ.

MCO Foundation Young Artists Series 2013: Jeline Oliva

Violinist Jeline Oliva

Featuring:
Maria Jelina Llorin Oliva, violin
Mary Anne Espina, piano

Programme:
Tomaso Vitali Chaconne in G minor
Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 Spring
Ernesto Vallejo Habanera Filipina No. 2
Angel Peña Philippine Serenade
Potenciano Gregorio Sr. Sarung Banggi
Niccolò Paganini Caprice No. 20 in D major
Camille Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor, Op. 28
Pablo de Sarasate Introduction et Tarantelle, Op.43

Violinist Jeline Oliva showed not just tremendous growth and maturity but also grace under pressure when she opened the MCO Foundation’s Young Artists Series 2013 at the Ayala Museum. Jeline played on the violin accompanied by pianist Mary Anne Espina a bunch of difficult pieces that would’ve given college level music students a difficult time.

It had been over a year since I last saw Jeline perform on stage so I was really curious to see how much she has grown since then. I noticed right away during her opening piece, Tomaso Vitali’s Chaconne in G minor that she has developed more presence on stage. If she had butterflies prior to her concert, then no one in the audience knew. After this, she performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Opus 24 or more popularly known as Spring. I think that the lightness and freshness of this piece was a good fit for a young violinist such as Jeline. In a normal recital/concert, this piece would’ve been the finale piece but this was how she just ended up the first half.

The second half had Jeline playing pieces by Filipino composers that weren’t included in the earlier version of the programme: Ernesto Vallejo’s Habanera Filipina No. 2, Angel Peña’s Philippine Serenade and Potenciano Gregorio Sr.’s Sarung Banggi giving the concert a much welcomed local flavor. And then it was time for Jeline to be on her own when she performed Niccolò Paganini’s Caprice No. 20 in D major. For most members of the audience, Jeline’s final two pieces were the most highly anticipated of the evening: Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor, Op. 28 and Pablo de Sarasate’s Introduction et Tarantelle, Op.43. Jeline was going through the Saint-Saëns well until she entered the capriccioso in which her shoulder rest slipped from her violin. But she showed calmness and great presence of mind, and quickly put the shoulder rest back into place without letting panic get in her way. And she was able to recover quickly from this very brief interruption and resumed playing like it never happened at all. But I had to note that it was during these two pieces also when I noticed signs that she was getting tired and weary. It was understandably so because she ended up performing for around two hours which is quite long for a concert that is supposed to be featuring young artists who are still on the rise.

One cannot deny that Jeline has improved tremendously since her Pilipinas Got Talent days. I just wish to see her play pieces that are lighter and fun, featuring less drama and tension, so that she can remind everyone that despite being a music prodigy, she is still a teenager.

Jeline first burst into the scene by becoming a finalist at the first season of ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010. Now mentored by Manila Symphony Orchestra’s concertmaster Gina Medina, Jeline has shown tremendous growth, polish and finesse as a violinist when compared to her PGT days.
