Sumi Jo conquers Manila anew with divine performance

Soprano Sumi Jo and tenor Paul Dominique Galvez

Opera fever filled the air as Korean soprano superstar Sumi Jo conquered Manila audiences anew during her one night only Divine Diva concert at the Meralco Theater.

Sumi Jo opted for a more subdued and refined music with most of the coloratura fireworks taking a backseat but that didn't stop her for being resplendent and sounding divine. The current venue with its better acoustics helped a lot when compared to that sorry excuse of a hall where her previous concert was held three years before.

Sporting a shorter and edgier hairdo, Sumi Jo delighted audiences with her rendition of Julius Benedict’s Gypsy and the Bird, Gioachino Rossini’s La pastorella dell'Alpi from Les soirees musicales, Maurice Ravel’s Vocalise-étude en forme de habanera, Léo Delibes’ Le filles de Cadix, and Giuseppe Verdi’s Ah, Fors'è lui… Sempre libera from La traviata. In some of the songs, she was joined by flutist Antonio Maigue and there was great interplay between the two especially in the Benedict and Delibes' pieces.

Personally, I was mesmerized by the relatively low key songs like Henry Purcell’s Music for a While, Vincenzo Bellini’s Eccomi, in lieta vesta... Oh! Quante volte from I Capuletti e i Montecchi, Charles Gounod’s Sérénade, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14, and most specially her sublime Plaisir d'amour by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini. These songs may not have a gazillion notes that went up and down and looped like a roller coaster, but the way Sumi Jo controlled, supported and shaped the notes and phrases was truly divine. When she went soft, one could almost hear a pin drop causing one to fear that she had lulled the audience to sleep. But the thunderous applause that greeted these numbers said otherwise.

A special guest for that night was tenor Paul Dominique Galvez who sang Quanto è bella from Gaetano Donizetti‘s L'elisir d'amore. He explained that years ago, he uploaded videos of him imitating Sumi Jo and that eventually caught her attention. And this has resulted with him sharing the stage with his idol.

There was no question that pianist Najib Ismail would repeat as her collaborating artist. He played with sensitivity and a complete assurance as if he had been accompanying her for years. And he was given the chance to be on the spotlight with a solo number choosing to play Francisco Santiago’s Nocturne in E flat minor.

As the concert came to a close, the people wouldn’t let Sumi go without her doing encores. Her first was a Korean song that led her to take over the piano like she did during her previous concert. I learned afterwards from baritone Byeong-In Park that what she sang was 그리운 금강산 which translates to English as Longing for Mount Geumgang. I didn’t have to ask anyone for her second encore though which was the popular O mio babbino caro from Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicci. I just knew that Paul Dominique Galvez would just be appearing once, so it came to no surprise that he showed up for the third encore. What was surprising was the choice of duet which was Rossini’s Buffo duetti di duo gatti. This number showed the humorous side of Sumi and also the soprano range of Paul as he took over the high notes at the end. Just like her previous concert, she capped things up with Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria.

Just like in her previous concert, she made a donation and this time, it’s the street kids that are being help by the Tulay ng Kabataan Foundation Inc. who were the beneficiaries.

About a week before Sumi Jo came here, there was news about the cancellation of three of her concerts in China. I hope that her disappointment regarding those cancellations was put on the back burner by how warmly she was received by the Philippine audience as if she was a pop/rock star.

Divine Diva Sumi Jo returns to Manila for one night only concert

Three years after a memorable Philippine debut, soprano superstar Sumi Jo returns to Manila for a one night only pre-Valentine’s Day concert on February 7, 2017, 8:00 PM at the Meralco Theater.

In this concert dubbed as Sumi Jo The Divine Diva, the Grammy Award winning Korean soprano pays tribute to another divine diva, Maria Callas on the occasion of her 40th death anniversary. Accompanied by pianist Najib Ismail, Sumi Jo will perform arias associated with Callas as well as a selection of her own favorites. Flutist Antonio Maigue and tenor Paul Dominique Galvez will be the evening’s special guests.

Since her previous visit here in Manila, I have to contend myself by seeing her perform at the closing ceremonies of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. I also shared her disappointment when she wasn’t given the chance to perform Simple Song #3 at the 2016 Academy Awards despite the song being nominated for the Best Original Song category.

Proceeds from the performance will be for the benefit of the Young Artists Development Program to continue helping and honing the artistry of our young talented Filipino artistry through performance opportunities, workshops, masterclasses, and scholarships.

Sumi Jo The Divine Diva, presented by the Cultural Arts Events Organizers, is also made possible in partnership with Marco Polo Hotel, 98.7 DZFE The Master's Touch, Steinway Boutique Manila and Leica Store Philippines.

Welcoming 2017 on a high note

Happy New Year everyone! 2016 was indeed music filled and and it definitely helped me get through such a tension filled year. I apologize that updates for the past year had been scarce, there is no excuse for that. But I believe that the arrival of the new year will whip me up back to shape literally and figuratively resulting in more regular updates. To start the 2017 ball rolling, here are just a few music events to look forward to this year.

The remainder of Yoshikazu Fukumura’s debut season with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra resumes with violinist Diomedes Saraza, Jr., cellist Renato Lucas, pianist Monique Duphil, and the orchestra’s former music director Olivier Ochanine as the featured guest artists. May there be no more snags this time so that I will finally see Olivier conduct Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93

Fukumura will also lead the PPO in select Gala performances of Ballet Philippines’ production of Swan Lake which will be running this February 24-March 5, 2017.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra now adds another night and venue for their 2017 gala concerts. Sunday concerts will happen now at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater, located at the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Loyola Heights Quezon City, just a day after the Saturday concerts at the Power Mac Center Spotlight in Circuit, Makati. This is good news for residents from the northern part of Metro Manila who find Makati too far a venue. The additional date also gives avid concertgoers the choice whether to catch the Saturday or the Sunday performance which is a godsend during a concert/event packed weekend. A definite highlight of the MSO’s upcoming season is a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana this October 7, 2017 at the Meralco Theater that aims to follow in the footsteps of the recent sold out season finale concert that featured Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, Op. 120.

For a limited time only, discounted subscription rates of P4000 (Henry Lee Irwin and Meralco Theater package) and P4500 (Power Mac Center Spotlight and Meralco Theater package) are available through info@manilasymphony.com or by calling 523-4712.

Gerard Salonga and the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, on the other hand, will be part of Tatlo 3 Nations. 1 Voice. happening this January 14, 2017 at the Theater at Solaire. In this concert, the Ateneo Chamber Singers, led by conductor Jonathan M. Velasco, will be joined by the Gaia Philharmonic Choir from Japan and the SYC Ensemble Singers from Singapore. Gerard hasn't been able to contain his excitement in having Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms included in this concert. Apart from this, Gerard will be shuttling back and forth to Hong Kong as he continues his stint as an Assistant Conductor for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Jaap van Zweden.

Happening just a few weeks from now is the 60th anniversary staging of Felipe de Leon and Guillermo Tolentino's Noli Me Tangere the Opera at the Cultural Center of the Philippines this January 28-February 3, 2017. New York based events and floral designer Jerry Sibal will be having his directorial debut with this opera. With Sibal also handling the set and costume design duties, it's been said that this production will feature the largest set that the CCP has ever had for an opera.

Three years after taking Manila by storm, Korean soprano Sumi Jo returns for a one night concert this February 7, 2017 at the Meralco Theater. She will be joined once again by collaborating pianist Najib Ismail. I have yet to see what she has in store for this evening but I'll be very pleased if she includes the Academy Award nominated Simple Song #3 in her song lineup.

These are just a few of what's on the horizon this 2017. More details about the concerts listed above and more will be coming in future blog posts. I'll also document in here what I've been listening, watching, reading, learning and playing at the moment. By sharing my experiences and ongoing journey in the world of classical music, I hope that I'll be able to entice more people to watch classical music performances in here.

Frederick Loewe I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady
Jung-Joon Ahn Ari Arirang
Sergei Rachmaninoff Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14
Giuseppe Verdi Ah fors'è lui… Sempre libera from La Traviata

Korean soprano superstar Sumi Jo’s one night concert at the Samsung Hall at the SM Aura Premier was the most happening night in town with classical/opera music lovers and a large number of Koreans showing up in full force. The concert resulted in a memorable night that showcased Sumi Jo’s incredible vocals despite the venue’s acoustics that had a lot to be desired.

Sumi Jo performed a selection of love songs and arias in different styles and languages, accompanied by pianist Najib Ismail and joined in a couple of numbers by flutist John Raymond Sarreal. No matter where the audience came from, there was something for them during that night as Sumi Jo serenaded the audience with arias like Giuseppe Verdi’s Ah fors'è lui… Sempre libera from La Traviata which had me marveling over how she managed reach that high E flat with such ease and control. Some members of the audience who weren’t familiar with the opera arias she performed were glad that she included more familiar tunes like Frederick Loewe’s I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, George Gershwin’s Summertime from Porgy and Bess, Johann Strauss Jr’s. The Beautiful Blue Danube, and the crowd pleasing Ah! vous dirai-je, maman from Le toreador by Adolphe Adam that featured the well known twinkle, twinkle little star melody.

I was literally surrounded by Koreans on that night and I took note on how pleased they were when Sumi Jo performed Jung-Joon Ahn’s Ari Arirang. I noticed that some were even to the point of tears. The Korean who was seated at my right asked me how I got to know Sumi Jo. I got the impression that it was a surprise for them to find out that non-Koreans do know who Sumi Jo is.

As always, the audience didn’t let Sumi Jo get off stage that quickly and demanded encores from her. Her encores were O mio babbino caro from Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini which she dedicated to her late father and Ave Maria by Franz Schubert which she dedicated to the survivors of the super typhoon Yolanda. When the people still asked for more, she then said that she wanted to sing in Korean that had the Koreans in the audience shouting their suggestions. She then settled for Boribat by Young-Ha Yoon but her pianist Najib had no clue as to what that piece was. And what was probably the biggest surprise of the evening; Sumi Jo took over piano duties (Najib could only look on the side) and accompanied herself while encouraging the Koreans in the audience to sing along with her.

The concert could’ve been a truly magical moment for me but I couldn’t help but notice how unsuitable the Samsung Hall was for a concert of this kind. The hall wasn’t built acoustically so Sumi Jo had to use a microphone for amplification and this somehow didn’t enable her to show everyone how awesome her vocal projection really is. I also had the misfortune in seating among the seats that malfunctioned a few times that night. There were times when it felt like the seats in our row were collapsing, throwing me and my seatmates forward. Korean Ambassador Hyuk Lee was seated right behind us and he, along with his seatmates, tried to figure out what went wrong with our seats. For a performance venue that held such promise and looked very impressive from the outside, it turned out to be such a huge let down after my experience with this concert.

A day after the concert, I had another opportunity to see Sumi Jo once again when she conducted a vocal masterclass at St. Scholastica’s College. I was able to see the humorous side of her as she instructed four very lucky (and very star struck) students. She didn’t hold back anything whenever she didn’t like what she heard. But when she did, she rewarded the students generously like tenor Nomher Nival who got a kiss in the cheek from her when he finally got a tricky passage right.
