Cinema Paradiso outdoor screening with live music at MiraNila

Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso is considered as one of the greatest films of all time. The film's score, composed by the father and son tandem of Ennio and Andrea Morricone, has equally attained classic status. Relive the movie accompanied by live music at a one time outdoor screening at the front lawn of the MiraNila Heritage House this coming February 5, 2026.

Billed as Cinema Paradiso Al Fresco, this early Valentine's Day treat will see an outdoor film screening of Cinema Paradiso. While the film is showing, the duo of violinist Alessio Benvenuti and pianist Mariel Ilusorio will perform the Morricones' music live.

At the end of the film, Tornatore himself will appear on screen to address the MiraNila audience.

Cinema Paradiso, released in 1988, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 62nd Academy Awards and Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989.

Violinist Alessio Benvenuti, also the concertmaster of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, has been lauded as an “Artist of High National and International Value” while Mariel Ilusorio, one of the country's premier pianists, boasts of an extensive career spanning four continents.

Cecile Licad holds solo piano concert at Gallery MiraNila on October 1

Whenever world-renowned pianist Cecile Licad performs piano concertos with an orchestra, the final note is always greeted by deafening applause by a dazzled and enthralled audience. The combination of a large theater packed to the brim, a full symphony orchestra, technically demanding pieces, and Licad's larger than life stage presence all add up to a grand experience.

Ilusorio Foundation and in collaboration with Gallery MiraNila by The Blue Leaf, Cecile Licad Up Close sees Licad performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 Quasi una fantasia or more popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata, Robert Schumman's Carnaval, Op. 9, Franz Liszt's St. Francis of Paola Walking on the Waves, a handful of Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces namely The Entertainer, Rose Leaf Rag, Stoptime Rag, and Easy Winters, and Frédéric Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23.

A recipient of the Leventritt Gold Medal, Grand Prix du Disque, and Pamana ng Pilipino Award, Ms. Licad has also worked with esteemed orchestras and distinguished conductors, including the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, as well as Sir Georg Solti, the National Symphony Orchestra under Mstislav Rostropovich, the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa, the London Symphony Orchestra under Kurt Masur, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Andre Previn, and the Russian Academy State Orchestra (Moscow) under People’s Artist of Russia Mark Gorenstein.

Tenor Arthur Espiritu holds one night only concert at MiraNila House on April 2

The MiraNila Heritage House & Library, in partnership with Leon Gallery and Gallery MiraNila of The Blue Leaf with support from the Bizu Groupe, presents a homecoming concert of tenor Arthur Espiritu happening on April 2, 2025, 6:30 PM at the Main Hall of the Miranila Heritage House.

Coming at the heels of Arthur performing the title role in Faust at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo in Palermo, Italy, the one night only concert at the MiraNila sees the critically acclaimed tenor perform music by Gabriel Fauré, Franz Lehar, Giacomo Puccini, Charles Gounod, Richard Strauss, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Francesco Sartori.

Tenor Arthur Espiritu was born in Morong, Rizal, Philippines. He migrated to the United States with his parents in his teens and finished with an Artist Diploma in Music Performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He won the La Scala award at the Belvedere Competition in 2007 and the distinguished George London Award in 2009.

Mr. Espiritu has portrayed numerous leading roles in North America, Europe, and Asia, with early career highlights that include his very first Ferrando in Michael Hampe’s staging of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in the Teatro alla Scala, the role of Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Israeli Opera Tel-Aviv, and the role of Publio in Mozart’s early work, Il sogno di Scipione, with the former Gotham Chamber Opera, New York.

Soprano Jade Riccio, an Italian-Filipina who hails from Palawan, earned a slot in the 2024 Person to Watch: Women Who Made It in Music. She was the sole recipient of the 37th Aliw Awards 2024 Hall of Fame from which she won five consecutive awards, including Best Classical Performer in 2018 and 2020 and Best Female Crossover Performer in 2019 and 2022. She earlier received highest recognitions during vocal competitions at the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2014 and the Jovita Fuentes Vocal Competition in 2015. As one of the most sought-after celebrity vocal coaches to some of Asia’s most shining stars, Ms. Riccio is also the CEO, creative producer, and chairperson of a music company called Riccio Music and Artistry (RMA) Studio Academy, a creative hub she founded during the pandemic, which now nurtures nearly 400 students from around the world.

Mariel Ilusorio

Pianist Mariel Ilusorio studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and the State College of Music and Theater Hanover (now Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media) in Lower Saxony, Germany. Under the tutelage of Stella Brimo, she won top prizes in Philippine piano competitions before continuing her studies overseas. After performing in the U.S., Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Indonesia and having lived twenty-six years in the U.S., Germany, and South Africa, she has made the Philippines her home. She continues performing and now organizes concerts and recitals. She is also in the faculty of the UST Conservatory of Music, St. Scholastica's College of Music, the Philippine High School for the Arts, and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

This April, the public gets the chance to hear these three outstanding performers in an environment conducive to master-level performances. In the once bucolic environs of Cubao, this four-story 1929 heritage house boasts a living room and library with near perfect acoustics. MiraNila Heritage House hosts romantic outdoor film screenings

Imagine a romantic evening under the stars, surrounded by the timeless beauty of MiraNila Heritage House and Library. This Valentine’s month, MiraNila opens its doors to couples, friends, and families seeking a truly unique Valentine’s celebration. Pelikula sa MiraNila presents an unforgettable experience where love, history, and cinema come together.

On February 4, the first of the two Valentine’s outdoor screenings, Pelikula sa MiraNila presents a back-to-back showcase of Gitling by Jopy Arnaldo and Past Lives by Celine Song. Both of these films, according to film critic Jason Tan Liwag, explore “unlived lives, cultural differences, and our unknowable selves through the prism of failed romance.”

Gitling, winner of Best Screenplay at Cinemalaya 2023, tells the story of a young Filipina translator and a middle-aged Japanese director as they navigate the challenges of language and understanding. Past Lives by Celine Song, an Academy Award Best Picture nominee in 2024, traces the lives of two childhood friends over 24 years as they reflect on love, connection, and their divergent paths.

On February 12, the event continues with an equally captivating lineup, beginning with two acclaimed fantasy-romance short films. Martika Ramirez Escobar’s Living Things, a Cinemalaya 2014 Best Short Film winner, tells the whimsical tale of a woman’s partner turning into a cardboard standee. Carla Pulido Ocampo’s Tokwifi, an award-winning film from FAMAS, Gawad Urian, Cinemalaya, and QCinema, tells the story of a 1950s mestiza star trapped in a television that fell from the sky and discovered by a young man from Bontok who does not know how to kiss. The evening culminates with Isa Pa with Feelings by Prime Cruz, a heartfelt romance about an aspiring architect and her deaf neighbor, played by Maine Mendoza and Carlo Aquino, as they navigate their growing connection.

Petty Benitez-Johannot, MiraNila Heritage House Archivist and Curator, says, “Through Pelikula sa MiraNila, we aim to extend MiraNila’s appeal beyond heritage and history by engaging young cineastes. By presenting non-formulaic films that resonate with younger audiences, we hope to create a dynamic cultural experience that will encourage more people to explore the unique charm of MiraNila.”

MiraNila will open at 4:45 PM with the screenings will starting at 6:00 PM.

Cellist Damodar Das Castillo excites in Strings of Gold series opener

With a remarkable combination of youthful vigor and artistic maturity, cellist Damodar Das Castillo continues to excite as he and the ever reliable pianist Mariel Ilusorio officially christened the MiraNila Heritage House and Library as Metro Manila's newest classical music performance venue.

The concert also served as the unveiling of the newly restored Steinway 1904 grand piano.  With its dark brown finish and various ornate accents like the rococo-styled feet, the rare piano is a welcome change to the dominant stark black concert grand pianos that have dominated the scene for decades. 

But the audience had to wait a bit to hear the piano as the program began with a solo by Damodar performing the Prelude from Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Right off the bat, Damodar, exuded a level of confidence and security that is beyond his 17 years.

And when joined by the seasoned Ilusorio in Frédéric Chopin's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, he held is own and the two played as equals as if longtime collaborators. The meaty Chopin sonata could've served as the concert finale piece but this just wrapped up the first half.

The second half was a mixed selection of pieces starting with Faye Miravite's Transcendence that uniquely incorporates Damodar's meditative chants. This was followed by Nicanor Abelardo's Cavatina, Henry Mancini's Moon River, and Richard Rodgers' Edelweiss, a trio of pleasant tunes. The familiarity of the latter two pieces unfortunately prompted some audience members to hum along with a few doing so severely off key.

To close out the program, Damodar performed the first movement of Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191. With such aplomb, Ilusorio showcased the newly restored Steinway's brilliance effectively, laying aside whatever misgiving an audience member who longed for an actual orchestra might've had. The longing would've been for the complete concerto being performed instead.

Post performance Q&A

The MiraNila audience couldn't get enough of the duo and they were rewarded with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Pezzo capriccioso, Op. 62 and Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission as encores that kept the mix of standard classical repertoire with the more recent, crowd-pleasing music presented in the concert.

The high ceiling of MiraNila house provided natural amplification and reverb, but making it very unforgiving even with the slightest intonation error. Thankfully, Damodar was very secure with his cello, showing no signs of hesitation. The only hesitation he had was during the post-performance Q&A section wherein he responded with just brief words compared to the more Ilusorio who gave eloquent answers as well as annotations throughout the evening.

The MiraNila Heritage House's inaugural Strings of Gold concert once again proved that Damodar Das Castillo is one of the country's most exciting young artists who has the potential to be a headliner on the international stage. And that Mariel Ilusorio remains one of the most reliable pianists who let her collaborators be at ease and truly shine on stage as well.

Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra homecoming concert at MiraNila Heritage House

MiraNila Heritage House & Library continues to establish itself as the newest classical music hub in the Metro with the announcement of Strings of Gold: The Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra's Triumphant Return from Europe performance happening on October 1, 2024, 6:00 PM at the Gallery MiraNila.

Last July, the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra (MSJO) received the gold prize in addition to the Grand Prix in the 13th Bratislava International Youth Music in Slovakia. It was their first participation in the festival.

Only two companies were awarded the Grand Prix in Bratislava this year, the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria from South Africa for their choir and the MSJO from the Philippines for their orchestra. In the same month, the MSJO journeyed to Mozart’s Vienna and garnered the top prize at the prestigious 2024 Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival, a reprise of their golden win of 2021, besting 140 orchestras from 33 countries.

The concert program will feature music for strings composed by Josef Suk, Antonio Vivaldi, and Antonín Dvořák. Modern popular classics by Andrea and Ennio Morricone, Harold Arlen, Ryan Cayabyab, Conrado del Rosario, BINI, and Benny Castillon, among others will also be performed.

Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra (MSJO)

The Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra (MSJO) is the string orchestra training program of the MSO Foundation. The junior orchestra is composed of the most advanced students of the MSO Music Academy and other qualified students ages 9 to 26 years old.

Between 2017 and 2019, the MSJO toured Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Korea, and Myanmar. Several MSJO members are top-prize winners of international competitions and of the Philippines’ National Music Competitions for Young Artists.

To date, several MSJO members are enrolled in leading music schools in the United States and Europe, such as the Juilliard School in New York, Cleveland State University, the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

Cello prodigy Damodar Das Castillo to perform at MiraNila Heritage House

Cello prodigy Damodar Das Castillo has been making waves since he burst into the scene at age seven and has since become one of the most exciting musicians of his generation. As he soars to greater heights, Damodar performs at a send-off concert presented by the MiraNila House and Library happening on September 19, 2024, 6:00 PM at the Main Hall of the MiraNila Heritage House in Quezon City.

The concert, billed as Strings of Gold: Send-off Concert of Cellist Damodar Das Castillo, will also feature pianist Mariel Ilusorio accompanying him on MiraNila's newly restored Steinway 1904 grand piano. This grand piano, restored by Danilo Lumabi, features an unusual rococo-style feet and is considered rare in the Steinway & Sons catalog.

The duo will perform music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Frederic Chopin, Antonín Dvořák, Nicanor Abelardo, Henry Mancini, Richard Rogers, and Faye Miravite.

Damodar Das Castillo

Damodar established his reputation at age seven. Guided and inspired by his cellist father, he joined the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra as its youngest member in 2015, rising to become its most frequently featured soloist.

Among his notable performances in 2017 was one before heads of state at the ASEAN Summit and as a featured solo artist making his debut with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

A two-time Ani ng Dangal Awardee in Music, Damodar went on to garner top prizes in prestigious international competitions, including The Young Musician in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2019; the International Anton Rubinstein Competition Cello Junior in Dusseldorf in March 2020; the Young Ludwig Youth Music Competition Age Group 2 in Berlin in September 2020; and the Musica Goritiensis International Music Competition Category C in Gorizia, Italy, in July 2021.

Damodar is currently enrolled in pre-college at the Mozarteum University Salzburg under Prof. Barbara Lübke-Herzl. He was recently offered a scholarship to further his studies under Prof. Valentin Radutiu at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden.

Beyond this prodigy’s classical studies is a teenager who dabbles in basketball, football, and table tennis. He enjoys playing death metal music on his electric cello and jamming with a jazz band. He seeks out universal truths while making his mark in classical music.

The cellist father, Alvin, said that his stewardship mainly lies in filling up competition applications and finalizing hotel bookings. "I just remind him about the competition date and I leave it to him to practice or not. I am not really that concerned if he wins or not. I am only concerned about how he will handle results of his preparations" (ABS-CBN News.)

Standard Insurance Company, under its Chairman Ernesto T. Echauz, has been Damodar’s constant supporter, gifting him with a cello handcrafted by Master Luthier George Gerl, a winner of the 2012 German Musical Instrument Prize.

Mariel Ilusorio

Mariel Ilusorio is a virtuoso concert pianist and a seasoned music educator. She studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and the State Academy of Music and Theater in Hannover. Top prizes came her way in piano competitions under the tutelage of Stella Brimo, followed by studies and performances in the United States, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Indonesia. After twenty-six years, Ilusorio returned to the Philippines, tantalizing audiences with her virtuoso piano playing. She concurrently serves as an organizer of concerts and recitals and is in the faculty of the UST Conservatory of Music, St. Scholastica's College of Music, Philippine High School for the Arts, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Manila.
