Zia's A Little Bit of Lovin’ Media Launch

Zia

I’ve always said many times before that my only complaint regarding Zia’s self-titled debut album was that it was too short for it only had six tracks. Now, there’s no reason for me to complain for there are ten tracks that make up Zia’s sophomore album entitled, A Little Bit of Lovin’ released by Polyeast Records.

A Little Bit of Lovin’ lends Zia’s refreshing and jazz influenced alto voice to more varied music styles like blues, rock, rap and folk. This album displays a lot of texture and color via organic music arrangements highlighted by guitar and trumpet solos. All this showcases Zia’s growth as an artist in such a short amount of time in the music industry.

Zia teams up once again with Jungee Marcelo for the album’s lead single Pasakalye and Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo which is the theme song of the movie of the same title. Marcelo was the man behind Ako Na Lang, Zia’s breakout hit from her previous album and now considered as her signature song. Zia shows that she can follow Marcelo’s footsteps in composing through four tracks namely Under and Over, On the Run, the album’s title track, Little Bit of Lovin’ and Sweet Memories. An unusual set of covers, the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and Asin’s classic Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran, both chosen by Zia herself reveals her diverse music tastes. And probably my favorite track in the album, Katulad ng Iba, sees Zia collaborating with rapper Gloc-9. This song was previously released for an anti-bullying campaign and it pleased me very much to have it included in this album.

Another thing I noticed in this album is that Zia smiled a lot more in the photos included in the packaging compared to the photos from her previous album. And it’s a lot more colorful as well. I may probably be looking too much into things but I feel like this is another way, aside from the music, for Zia to show more of herself. And because of this, I won’t be surprised if this album gets more than just a little bit of lovin’ from listeners, old and new alike.

Zia's A Little Bit of Lovin', released by Polyeast Records is now available in record stores nationwide. Pasakalye and the rest of the tracks are also available for downloading via MyMusicStore Philippines and iTunes.

Zia Bloggers’ Night

Zia Quizon

Zia Quizon has truly become one of the new darlings of the local music industry ever since she released her self titled debut album. Even Lea Salonga herself sang her praises and said that she’s one of the new artists to come out that she really likes. So it’s no longer surprising that she bagged the Best New Artist award at the recently concluded MYX Music Awards 2012.

After some months since her album launch/concert, I got the chance to see her perform once again during the Zia Bloggers’ Night that was held at Club Phi in Metro Walk. Several radio  people and bloggers were there to see her perform. I noticed right away that she appeared more comfortable on stage compared to her performance during her launch although she did admit later on that she still gets nervous before every performance. She performed a short set that included Dear Lonely, Simple Girl and Ako Na Lang which are the singles from her album. Tucked in between these songs was a rendition of My Heart Belongs to Daddy which brought her ever supportive mother, Zsa Zsa Padilla to tears. Zsa Zsa did thank Zia afterwards for fulfilling her dream of becoming a stage mother. As an encore, she performed a medley of songs by Carole King. It was very amusing to see the reaction of the other people who haven’t seen nor heard her perform live before. And I somehow saw in their amazement the way that I reacted when I first saw Zia perform live.

Zia also admitted that she tends to be awkward when doing spiels on stage in between songs and hopes that what she thinks is her lack of charm is what connects her to the audience. Although Zia doesn’t see herself as an actress, she doesn’t want to close doors on acting and that made her mother breathe a sigh of relief since she may have some plans for her daughter that involves her to act. But I do hope that she focuses on singing than in acting but this is just my two cents.

Zia and Zsa Zsa Padilla

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Zia’s self titled debut album is one of the standout releases last year but it was just too short with just six tracks. I do hope that she releases a new album soon with more tracks and hopefully, they will be original material. She has exhibited a knack for songwriting via Simple Girl and I think that she should release more of her compositions since listeners are now more receptive to local singer/songwriters than ever before. I really do hope that Polyeast Records will give Zia a chance to shine musically this 2012 by releasing more material from her. Until then, I’ll put her debut album for more spins.

Zia’s self titled debut album is available in record stores everywhere. It is also available for download at MyMusicStore Philippines. Special thanks to Terranova, Mossimo and Club Phi Bar.

Zia, Simple Girl Concert

Zia Quizon

She might have penned Simple Girl, but there seems to be absolutely nothing simple about Zia Quizon. Having Dolphy (the Philippines’ King of Comedy) and Zsa Zsa Padilla (dubbed as the Divine Diva) as parents, Karylle as a sister and belonging to a showbiz clan, Zia seemed destined to have the spotlight shine on her one day. And on the eve of her 20th birthday, Zia did have the spotlight on her as she had an intimate concert called Simple Girl coinciding with the launch of her debut album held at the T.E.A.T.R.I.N.O. in Promenade, Greenhills. Zia’s family, friends, members of the press/media, fans and well wishers filled the venue to capacity which bode well for this newest gem of Polyeast Records.

Amidst a video slide show of photos from her childhood, the band started playing a few riffs and Zia who was still off stage joined in by singing a few runs which lit up the audience. Cheers almost drowned the band when she finally came on stage and sang Simple Girl. Right from the start, the ease in which she sang was noticeable despite her looking very nervous. She did loosen up whenever she had her spiels in which she admitted that she was indeed nervous. But whatever nerves she had while on stage didn’t manifest in her singing. One person who also seemed nervous and yet excited at the same time was Zsa Zsa Padilla who stood proudly in different sections of the intimate venue to watch her daughter perform. I am pretty sure that one proud moment for her was when Zia sang one of her hits from the 80’s which was Mambobola done with a slower and more mellow arrangement.

Zia performing

Zia may not possess a vocal range that reaches the stratosphere but she does have an innate musicality and a very secure sense of pitch. She also demonstrated a clear sense of who she is as an artist through her concert repertoire. Her choice of Supposed to Grow Old by Justin Nozuka and Don’t Know Why by Norah Jones didn’t feel like they were forced upon her and that they were really her choices.

Zia and Jay R

One of the highlights of the concert was when Zia sang Ako na Lang which is also the carrier single of her album. Playful in both the lyrics and the rhythm, this song showcases the maturity of her voice without abandoning her youth. And most important of all, it didn’t sound like anyone else. During the concert, she credited her dad, Dolphy the most for her taste in music. And as a tribute to him, she sang another track from her album, Smile, which is also one of her father’s favorite songs. Jay R was the concert’s special guest and he performed a couple of numbers, a duet with Zia and a solo.

Zia, being the daughter of celebrity parents may have had the door to show business opened to her very easily. But skepticism comes with this entry to the industry. Fortunately, her talent, unique vocals and superb musicality are more than to have these doubters be silenced. The album in itself is a joy to listen to and my biggest complaint is that it’s just too short with only six tracks clocking only around twenty minutes. A talent like her deserves a full length album with mostly original compositions. As I’ve noted earlier, she seemed nervous during her concert and it was understandable since it was her first. And now I can’t wait to see her blossom and get more comfortable on stage. With Zia in the picture, the OPM scene has definitely looked brighter and it couldn’t be simpler than that.
