Ryu Goto, with a burning heart and a super cool mind

Violinist Ryu Goto

As the 45th Anniversary concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra at the Manila Cathedral draws near, a few select members of the press were able to take a sneak peek at their rehearsals with guest violinist/conductor Ryu Goto at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

With the orchestra’s string section, we got to see Ryu in action as he took on double duties as violin soloist and conductor in Antonio Vivaldi’s Le quattro stagioni/The Four Seasons. Having a violin on hand was very convenient as he was able to convey clearly how he wanted some certain passages to sound.

Ryu Goto and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

As much as I wanted to see the rehearsal of him conducting Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, B. 163, I guess that I just had to wait for the actual concert itself for me to see it.

After the rehearsals, there was a brief interview with him wherein I was able to get to know him better. Below are what he said that struck me the most.

“I’m not defined by music, but it’s a huge part of who I am.”

Those who have followed Ryu’s career know that he is juggling three careers: violinist, karate athlete, and entrepreneur/venture capitalist. He tends to focus on what he is doing at the time. Right now, because of the upcoming concert, he is focused on the music. He hasn’t encountered a time when he had to be focused on all three at the same time. Although it has happened sometimes when he had to focus on two simultaneously.

“Create maximum output in the limited amount of time.”

It was surprising for others (but not for me) when Ryu revealed that he doesn’t like to practice. He even says that no one loves to practice. And because he doesn’t like to practice, he makes sure that he practices efficiently. He mentioned that there are a lot of resources are online like books and videos that can help a musician learn quicker than before. Although one has to read the reviews to know which online resources are helpful or not.

“It takes a different mindset to have a career in music.”

Most were taken aback when Ryu said don’t look for a career in music. And he had to stress that there’s a big BUT there. If one wants to become a millionaire and have job security, then one has to change his/her mindset. One has to love music, bring out his/her personality and put him/herself out there (exposing even the flaws). It is about experiences and who one is as a person more than the money and the fame. He also admitted that he didn't set out to be a professional violinist. It just somewhat happened.

“The heart has to burn but the mind has to be super cool.”

Things turned into a bit of a motivational speaking engagement for Ryu. He said that those pursuing a career in music must have the fire within while maintaining level head. He agrees that one needs to be practical too but being practical doesn’t mean being impersonal and emotionless.

“The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra is the most genuine and professional people that I’ve known.”

Ryu had very nice words about the PPO. He said that he has encountered community orchestras with such passion but with amateur skill level. On the other hand, he has encountered top class orchestras at the top of their game but their attitude about music leaves something to be desired. But that’s not the case with the PPO as they are very good while having a great love for what they do, he says. I guess that’s why he is collaborating once again with the PPO for the third time in just a little over two years.

Catch Ryu Goto and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra this November 15 2018, 8:00 PM at the Manila Cathedral, in Intramuros Manila. Grab tickets now as they are going fast.

4th Danish Film Festival: Under sandet/Land of Mine, finding humanity in the aftermath of war

The screening of Under sandet/Land of Mine, a film that bravely tackled war issues that were considered taboo for decades was the highlight of the opening night of the 4th Danish Film Festival held at the Robinson’s Movieworld in Robinson’s Galleria.

Prior to the screening, a cocktail reception hosted by the Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines and Ambassador Jan Top Christensen was held where guests enjoyed the food and drinks, especially the various cheeses by Arla. Among the guests were members of the diplomatic corps, Danish community in Manila, friends of Denmark and several college students. Also present were Atom and Anne Magadia whose film Dagsin/Gravity is among the films to be screened at the festival.

I pretty much tasted almost everything that Arla had to offer that night and that made me forget how difficult travelling along EDSA was for me on that day. And it prepared me to be in good spirits which was needed while watching the opening night film.

Under sandet/Land of Mine

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, Under sandet/Land of Mine is directed by Martin Pieter Zandvliet and stars Roland Møller, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Louis Hofmann, Joel Basman, Emil Belton, and Oskar Belton.

Early in the film, Sgt. Rasmussen (Roland Møller) singles out a German soldier among those marching dejectedly and lashes out at him violently for clutching a Danish flag. This sets the tone on how the Denmark viewed the Germans, who occupied Denmark for five years, shortly after World War II.

So it’s no surprise that the Danish carried out orders from Great Britain to employ German prisoners of war, some just boys in their teens, to defuse landmines which is in violation of the Geneva Convention. And the film focused on Sgt. Rasmussen and the 14 German boys under his command to work on the mines.

But once the boys introduced themselves to Sgt. Rasumssen, I already had an inkling that in time, he would care for them. And he did soon after he suffers his first casualty. These boys were no longer German prisoners of war to him but actual human beings with their respective stories. This softening of stance causes him to get into trouble with his superior Captain Ebbe (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) and this forces him to make a crucial decision in the end that leaves his fate and that of the remaining boys unanswered.

The film gave a glimpse of a moment in post-World War II history that is rarely discussed and has been considered taboo for decades. I think that it’s important that the inconvenient gray areas of the history of war be told. The veterans who have served in the war and those who lived during those times have either died already or have grown too old to tell their respective tales.

The screening of Under sandet/Land of Mine was part of the 4th Danish Film Festival presented by the Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines, the Danish Film Institute, Robinson's Movieworld, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

Leeds winner Eric Lu releases new album

Pianist Eric Lu

One of the rising star pianists today is undoubtedly the 20 year old American Eric Lu who won First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition 2018 last September. This big win just continued his ascent that started a few years ago when he was just 17 ending up as a prize winner at the 2015 Chopin International Competition.

This year’s Leeds competition kept me and some people I know from my side of the world awake at unholy hours just to experience the music and all the excitement in real time. I think that there was a heightened interest at the competition this year since 2015 First Prize Winner Anna Tsybuleva was a recent guest in the country when she went on tour with violinist Yu-Chien “Benny” Tseng and the Asian Youth Orchestra back in August. Also, the 2009 First Prize Winner Sofya Gulyak have performed here already a handful of times. Since the Philippines have been treated with Leeds winners this past decade, I do wish that Eric Lu follows suit and performs here soon.

While crossing my fingers and waiting for that to happen, I’ll just listen to his newest release, his first under Warner Classics and Erato. This album features the live recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner, and Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 and Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52 from The Leeds International Piano Competition 2018. This album, along with a worldwide management deal with Askonas Holt, is part of the new prize package at the competition introduced this year.

If the album is not enough, watch the competition on demand here via medici.tv. Here are some snippets of Eric from the competition.

P.S.
I hope that I don’t have to cross my fingers for too long.

Violinist Ryu Goto returns for PPO’s 45th anniversary concert

Japanese-American violinist Ryu Goto returns to the country for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 45th Anniversary concert happening on November 15, 2018, 8:00 PM at the historic Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila.

Ryu Goto will take on double duties at the concert as the violin soloist in Antonio Vivaldi’s mega popular Le quattro stagioni/The Four Seasons and also as conductor in that piece and in Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, B. 163.

He last set foot in the country when he performed Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 back in September 2016 at the opening concert of Yoshikazu Fukumura’s inaugural season as the PPO’s music director/principal conductor. Ryu recently reunited with the PPO and Fukumura last October during the orchestra’s tour in Japan for the Asia Orchestra Week 2018.

As I count the days until the concert, I’ll relive Ryu Goto’s debut performance here by putting his Légende CD for a spin. Recorded live in Wiesbaden in 2015, this recording features Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 and Henryk Wieniawski’s Légende, Op. 17 with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under the baton of Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

An idyllic music lineup evoking rustic, rural landscapes performed by Ryu Goto and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra inside one of the most historic places in the country should be more than enough to check out this historic concert.

This Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 45th Anniversary Concert at Manila Cathedral is presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in partnership with the Intramuros Administration, Manila Cathedral, and the Bureau of the Treasury.

Academy Award winning/nominated films at the 4th Danish Film Festival

The Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines presents a new selection of contemporary and critically acclaimed films, led by the Academy Award nominated film Under sandet/Land of Mine, at the 4th Danish Film Festival happening on November 8-11 at Robinson's Movieworld, Robinson's Galleria.

A tale about young German prisoners of war forced to defuse land mines in Danish territory, Under sandet/Land of Mine was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. The film is directed by Martin Pieter Zandvliet and stars Roland Møller. Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Louis Hofmann, Joel Basman, Emil Belton, and Oskar Belton.

The multi-awarded Filipino film, Dagsin/Gravity, is also among the movies to be screened at the festival as part of the strengthening of Danish-Philippine cultural ties. Inspired by the ideas of Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and French existentialist Albert Camus, this film had its debut at the 2016 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, is directed by Atom Magadia and stars Tommy Abuel, Lotlot De Leon, Benjamin Alves, Janine Gutierrez, Sue Prado, and Alex Diaz.

“We are very happy to continue developing our social and cultural links to the Philippines. Films, literature, music – cultural events create common ground between people beyond institutionalized politics. Now again Filipinos get another chance – through our 4th Danish Film Festival - to learn about some of social, political and cultural characteristics of Danes and Denmark. We believe by engaging with each other, we can inspire each other and develop our relations. I look forward to seeing an even bigger crowd than last year at our film screenings in November,” says Ambassador of Denmark to the Philippines, Jan Top Christensen.

As always, screenings are for free on a first come, first-served basis. Very likely also that all the films will have English subtitles. Although it may be possible that Otto er et næsehorn/Otto is A Rhino will be in English to accommodate the younger movie goers.

Frygtelig lykkelig/Terribly Happy spins a riveting yarn about Robert Hansen, a Copenhagen police officer who, following a nervous breakdown, is transferred to a small provincial town to take on the mysteriously vacated marshal position and subsequently gets mixed up with a married femme fatale. Robert’s big city temperament makes it impossible for him to fit in, or understand the uncivilized, bizarre behavior displayed by the townspeople.
