Pop goes Performatura! CCP literary festival returns live and on-site

In celebration of World Poetry Day last March 21, the Kamuning Bakery and Cafe's Pandesal Forum invited two of the country's esteemed literary figures namely Butch Dalisay and Vim Nadera.

Moderated by Wilson Lee Flores, the forum had Nadera and Dalisay share their respective insights not just on poetry, but also in literature, specifically Philippine literature, in general.

Vim Nadera, the pioneer of Poetry Therapy in the country, acknowledged that the balagtasan has given way to FlipTop. These rap battles have been the rage for the past decade or so and is said to be what the balagtasan has evolved into. He also recognized the emergence of spoken word artists who have capitalized on hugot or the pent up, innermost feelings, mostly of hurt, then expressing them in front of an audience. Nadera then said that the currently popular forms and their respective young writers should be welcomed into the fold. The old guard should recognize their works and then use their experience and knowledge to raise the level of the young writers in order for them to be globally competitive.

Butch Dalisay also echoed Nadera's sentiments on Philippine poetry and literature's aim to be a global force. Dalisay laments that poetry has been divorced from creative writing and that poets have receded into the academia. Instead of writing for people at large, they wrote more for themselves, hence it is now hard to find a poet who is well known and admired by the masses. As one of the rare Filipino contemporary writers published internationally, Dalisay shared the advice to young writers hoping to crack the global market to be the best Filipino writer of their time.

Efforts by the government to promote Philippine poetry and literature were also discussed during the forum. Beverly Siy, from the Intertextual Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines was invited to join the forum to present the upcoming Performatura Festival happening on March 31-April 2, 2023 at the Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (Black Box Theater).

Siy, who has been one of the most active promoters of Philippine literature online during the pandemic, laid out the numerous activities lined up at this festival of written words and performances that is returning on-site this year after an online edition back in 2021.

Beverly Siy, Vim Nadera, Butch Dlisay, and Wilson Lee Flores

Here's a brief line up of what is in store at Performatura this year.

The second day also gives the spotlight to National Artist for Literature Gemino Abad who will give a talk on performing written poetry.

April 2, 2023, Araw ni Balagtas

The 3rd day pays tribute and celebrates the 149th birth anniversary of Francisco Baltazar.

The last day will feature performances by The Makatas with Ingay Likha battle rap artists Tulala, Zantasa and D.O.C.; a talk by Singaporean literary artist Chris Mooney Singh talks about Balagtasan in the World Literature, a talk by National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario about the significance of Bataan in the life of Balagtas; and performances by teachers and students of Bataan High School for the Arts.

Closing the festival is KamPerformatura’s offering of poetry and performances by the youth participants, kickstarting the Tanghal Makata 2023, the Performatura-born competition.

Judging the cometition are spoken word expert Mark Ghosn, poet performer Kooky Tuason, and authentic mambabalagtas from Bulacan Melandro Pascual to name a few. Tanghali Makata 2021, Librarian Juireo Abela of Lucena City, will be on hand to present the Sam Penaso trophy and laurel sculpture by poet Raul Funilas to the next winner. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng lends golden touch at PPO concert

Conductor Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, the Serenade to Music soloists,
and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

The latest performance of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra proved that a woman's touch is indeed golden as guest conductor Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng led the orchestra in what has been the most buzz worthy concert of the season so far.

Any fears that interest would wane after the concerts of the five shortlisted conductors have finished were unfounded as this Shangkuan-Cheng's outing was a sold out affair. The talk for this engagement intensified with the announcement of three pieces by Filipina composers in the program which was very much welcomed unlike the usual, almost token Filipino pieces that were performed earlier in the season.

The trio of pieces by the Filipina composers started with Marie Jocelyn Marfil’s Pyagsawitan Wedding and Harvest which was a rhythmic delight, abundant with percussion from indegenous instruments to the col legno of the strings before giving way to a somber, reflective finish. Next was National Artist for Music Lurcrecia Kasilag's Festival from Philippine Scenes, a short piece that captured the mood of a fiesta complete with shouting from the male members of the orchestra that ended with an exclamation point by the gong. Lastly, Denise Santos' The Light of Extreme Darkness was very cinematic, lush, nd ultimately uplifting.

The enthusiastic reception these pieces got was a stark contrast to the muted, even averse, reaction that some contemporary works have received in the past.

The other piece that got a lot of attention was Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music that featured some of the country's finest vocalists namely Bianca Lopez-Aguila, Stefanie Quintin, Mary Louise Macanaya-Alcantara, Sheila Marie Ferrer, Paul Ryan Arcolas, Maria Blanca Krystl Buesa, June Gonzaga, Mia Ariana Tanciongco, John Philip Bautista, Ervin Lumauag, Kevin Maske, Tomas Umbero Virtucio, Jr., Nil's Flores, Kris Gonzales, Lawrence Jatayna, and Jed Marcelo who were each given a chance to shine in solos to this piece with text from William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.

The second half of the concert consisted of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92. Familiarity with this often performed piece offered the chance to scrutinize further the Met's acoustics. The projected sound's lack of depth that has been noticed before became more apparent, with the lower strings not projecting well. With the upper strings dominating, the overall sound felt shrill and shallow. The double bassists were having a riot during the finale but they were barely audible, unless one shuts out the other sections and focus solely on them.

Conductor Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

Despite the Met's acoustics letting down what could have been a very enjoyable Beethoven, the concert as a whole was still a success based on Shangkuan-Cheng's performance and excellent programming. The improvement in acoustics by the ceiling panels is not enough and the Met stage is begging for an entire acoustic shell.

The PPO 38th concert series wraps up next month and hopefully, the next PPO Music Director/Principal Conductor will be announced by then.

A Francophonie night of art songs, opera arias with Marielle Tuason

Pianist Gabriel Paguirigan,
Romanian Ambassador Răduţa Matache,
and soprano Marielle Tuason

During her opening remarks, Romanian Ambassador Răduţa Matache told her colleagues and other guests to forget about work for the meantime and just enjoy a night of music as the Embassy of Romania and Alliance française de Manille presented Francophonie Opera Night featuring soprano Marielle Tuason and pianist Gabriel Paguirigan.

Soprano Marielle Tuason

Setting work worries aside came easy as Marielle enchanted the audience with her performance of art songs in French namely Villanelle by Eva Dell'Acqua, Villanelle, H 82, Op.7 No.1 by Hector Berlioz, Plaisir d'amour by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, and Oh! Quand je dors by Franz Liszt. She also gave a rendition of a Romanian piece, Ochi albaştri-s drăgălaşi. Op.41. Nr.3 by Eduard Caudella, that clearly delighted Ambassador Matache.

The second half of the recital showcased Marielle's coloratura prowess with a selection of arias in both French and Italian namely Chacun le sait from La fille du regiment by Gaetano Donizetti, Caro nome from Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, Prendi per me sei libero... il mio rigor dimentica from L'Elisir d'amore by Donizetti, and Je veux vivre from Romeo et Juliette by Charles Gounod.

Italian Ambassador Marco Clemente

Serving as the intermission, Italian Ambassador Marco Clemente gave an enthusiastic lecture about the history of opera, especially of French opera like how it flourished, the challenges it faced, and how it eventually attained importance and significance second only to Italian opera.

The performance was proceeded by a soirée wherein the Alliance française de Manille and a handful of Ambassadors announced upcoming Francophonie events lined up for the rest of March.

Xavier Leroux, Joseph Felix Assad, Fortune Ledesma,
Canadian Ambassador David Hartman, Moroccan Ambassador Mohammed Rida El Fassi,
French Ambassador Michèle Boccoz, Romanian Ambassador Răduţa Matache,
Cambodian Ambassador Phan Peuv, Lao Ambassador Sonexay Vannaxay, and Marc Piton

Some of these events include Coffee Conversations with Virginie Bouyx and Jessica Zafra, which is also the next installment of Les Jeudis Culturels by the Embassy of France. A couple of Le Ciné Club special screenings, Güeros presented by the Mexican Embassy and Opinci & Povestea unui pierde-vară presented by the Romanian Embassy are also in store. All of these Francophonie events will take place at the Alliance française de Manille.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, Jaime Laya, and Kabataang Gitarista

The Cultural Center of the Philippines' outreach program bid the Arts' month adieu with Huni Mula sa Sacristia, an intimate afternoon of music held at the Diocesan Archives and Museum at the San Bartolome Parish Compound in Malabon.

Inside a jam-packed venue, the program featured performances by the Kabataang Gitarista, violin/vocalist crossover artist Jobry Cimafranca, and the Male Ensemble Philippines.

Kabataang Gitarista

The Kabataang Gitarista opened the performances with a selection of pieces that showcased the collaborative spirit of ensemble guitar playing whether it be a duo, a trio, or a quintet.

Jobry Cimafranca

Jobry Cimafranca continues to carve a name for himself beyond the classical music circles as he has now added pop vocals in his solo acts.

Male Ensemble Philippines

The Male Ensemble Philippines proved to be a huge hit as the group serenaded the audience with classic songs by Basil Valdez, the Apo Hiking Society, and the Bee Gees. They also showed a generous dose of humor when singing JK Labajo's mega hit Buwan that led the audience clamoring for an encore.

In attendance were CCP Chairman Jaime C. Laya, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Director Victorino Manalo, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, D.D. of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalookan, and Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval.

With the enthusiastic response from the audience, it won't be surprising to see more intimate performances such as this be held at the Diocesan Archives and Museum, just behind the San Bartolome Church.

Proceeds went to purchase a brand new harp which was donated to the CCP Orchestra which became the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Inspired by its initial fundraising success, the FCCP proceeded to sponsor the visiting Cleveland Symphony Orchestra under the world-famous conductor Loren Maazel. The funds raised were used to sponsor two successful CCP Summer Outreach Concerts which brought the PPO with Prof. Basilio Manalo as conductor on concert tours around the country.

In 2001, the FCCP became the Friends for Cultural Concerns of the Philippines to widen the scope of its contributions.

During the 2004 – 2006 term of lawyer-business woman Mellie Ablaza, the organization donated three million pesos to the NMP in return for which the “Introduction Room” of the National Art Gallery was named after the FCCP in perpetuity.

Electrifying Diomedes Saraza, Jr in Met solo debut with the PPO

Conductor Haoran Li and violinist Diomedes Saraza Jr.

Diomedes Saraza, Jr. has been one of the most visible and active concert violinists in the country. For his latest outing, he made his Metropolitan Theater debut as a soloist at the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra's latest subscription concert series.

Performing Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47, the same piece he played with the PPO at their historic Carnegie Hall concert back in 2016, Dio had this air of reliability and security. There was this sense of ease that he could do no wrong and all that was left was for the aduience to enjoy the masterfully played Sibelius concerto to the fullest. Conductor Haoran Li provided great support to Dio, ensuring that both soloist and the PPO remain on the same page, so to speak.

After several enthusiastic curtain calls, Dio provided more fireworks with the crowd pleasing Niccolò Paganini's Caprice No. 5 in A Minor, Op. 1 for his encore.

Conductor Haoran Li and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

Haoran Li, the fifth and final conductor shortlisted for the position of PPO's Music Director/Principal Conductor brought sensitivity and subdued elegance by the way he weaved the overall arc in Antonino Buenaventura's By the Hillside. While there might be a sense of déjà vu with yet another Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky at the Met, the theater's much improved acoustics meant that the colors and textures of each section are more vivid and clear compared to when this piece was heard last November.

While Dio provided the flashiness, Li was more reserved ending the concert with Sergei Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Op. 34 for the orchestra's encore.

Now that all five finalists's respective concerts are done, the wait begins for the announcement on who the next PPO Music Director/Principal Conductor will be.

Showing solidarity with Ukraine through arts and culture

Slava Ukraini!

Last year, the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces dominated the headlines. The war still rages on but it is no longer as reported like before especially in local news programs.

To mark the first anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Embassies of France and Germany presented a screening of On the Trail of War Crimes: Murder of Ukranian Civilians a documentary by German war journalist Carsten Stormer investigating Russia's war crimes against Ukranian civilians.

Carsten Stormer

The screening was followed by a testimony by Lidiia Koval, a Ukrainian volunteer of the We Save Ukraine Foundation. She gave a personal account of how her city was shelled by Russian forces and also detailed how the foundation helps refugees and soldiers on the frontline.

Both the documentary and Lidiia's story serve as a reminder that although the war may no longer dominate the headlines, it still goes on. That is not only the people of Ukraine who suffer, but the rest of the world as well. Ukraine is one of the Philippines' sources of grain and the war has only made the supply more scarce and prices higher.

Lidiia Koval (right) and Anna Adams (left)

The event was also an opportunity to get acquainted with the small Ukranian community in the Philippines. Although far away from their homeland, they remain defiant and firmly believe that they will end up victorious in this war.

Since the war began, there has been a movement to make people aware that Ukraine and its people are separate and distinct from Russia. The drive to de-Russify Ukranian art and culture has brought some surprising discoveries.

For example, music composers like Mikola (Nikolai) Kapustin and Rinehold Glière have been considered as Russians for decades. But now, they are starting to be referred to as Ukranians with Kapustin now having the name Mikola instead of Nikolai. The same can be said about visual artists like Kazmir Malevich, Arkhyp Kuindzhi, and Ivan Aivazovsky as galleries worldwide have been referring to them as Ukranians too.

Learning and appreciating Ukranian arts and culture is a way of showing solidarity with its people. Recognizing Ukraine's culture and heritage means standing up against its aggressors. Slava Ukraini!

Special thanks to Arthur Tselishchev for the introductions to Ukranian visual art and folk/world music. Not only is he a model, but he is also a painter. Check out his works at https://www.arthur-ts.com/.

Below are some videos and music showcasing Ukranian culture.

First is a performance by the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine conducted by Oksana Lyniv during their performance at last year's Beethovenfest in Bonne, Germany. The concert also features Ukranian pianist Dmiytro Choni. Performed at the concert are a couple of works by Ukranian composers namely Victoria Poleva and Borys Lyatoshynsky.

DakhaBrakha is a Ukranian quartet formed in 2004. Their discography cannot be easily categorized, think of it as world music with a unique Ukranian folk music flavor. Below is their latest album Alambari.
