My desire to watch chamber music performances had me rushing back to Metro Manila coming from Batangas City just to make it to the Clarion Chamber Ensemble’s most recent concert, entitled Let’s Get Intimate held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Little Theater.

I arrived a bit late and missed the first couple of numbers. I only managed to get into my seat just in time for pianists Seung Yun Lee and Hyun Joo “Julia” Lee’s to play Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche. A piece that holds a special meaning for me, their performance became a nostalgic trip down memory lane that brought a smile to my face.

Next up was a set of songs by the real life music couple, soprano Rachelle Gerodias and baritone Byeong-In Park. Accompanied by pianist Mariel Ilusorio and flutist David Jerome Johnson, Rachelle’s rendition of La flûte enchantée highlighted the exoticism of Maurice Ravel’s Scheherazade. Byeong-In, bringing along his crew of violinist Juan Luis Muñoz and mandolin player Jayson Mangalino with him, showed some humor and charm with Deh, vieni alla finestra from Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The set ended with the duet Cinque, dieci, venti from Le nozze di Figaro. Not being familiar with the arias, I wasn’t able to get the narrative arc.

One of the highlights of the concert for me was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Valse & Romance, a couple of pieces for 6 hands that had Seung Yun Lee, Hyun Joo “Julia” Lee, and Mariel Ilusorio performing on just one piano. The different layers of the piece, played with such consistency was delightful to hear. And with the three of them so close together, it was piano playing at its most intimate. So fascinated was I with the Rachmaninoff pieces that I was reliving them even though the Deux Interludes by Muñoz, Johnson and Seung Yun Lee was being performed. Up to now, I couldn’t recall how the Jacques Ibert pieces were but I remember fondly the sounds of the Rachmaninoff.

While I wasn’t able to grasp fully their earlier songs, Rachelle and Byeong-In’s Bess, you is my woman now posed no problem for me and I was able to savor this favorite from George Gerswhin’s Porgy and Bess. And when I thought that I completely missed the Astor Piazzolla’s tangos that started the show, there was still Oblivion performed by Muñoz, Johnson, Seung Yun Lee along with dancer PJ Rebullida. I found out later on that Rebullida also danced during the preceding tangos.

The latter part of the concert highlighted the real life couples, beginning with Rachelle and Byeong-In’s Nedda!...Silvio! A quest' ora from I Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, yet another duet from an opera I haven’t encountered before. Finally, Ilusorio and Muñoz performed together as a duo with Four Romantic Pieces, Op. 75 by Antonín Dvořák. In keeping with the title of the concert, the pieces were neither bombastic nor full of flair but were rather lyrical, sophisticated, and yes, intimate.

Everybody came back waltzing on stage becoming back up dancers to Rachelle and Byeong-In’s duet of Lippen Schweigen from Franz Lehar's Die lustige Witwe giving some merriment to the finale. For an encore, Rachelle and Byeong-In gave a tender rendition of Mike Velarde Jr.’s Minamahal Kita. I think that this was the first time I heard Byeong-In singing in Filipino.

In between the numbers, Joanna Ong Go gave some useful background info about the pieces and the love letters written by various personalities like Martha Graham, Robert Browning, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johnny Cash and even Elizabeth Taylor gave the concert more romantic flavor. Compared to Clarion Chamber Ensemble’s previous concerts, the Let's Get Intimate was of a lighter, feel good fare. There weren't any unusual instrument combinations and the spotlight was definitely on the two real life music couples.

Clarion Chamber Ensemble ventures into bold, brash and beautiful music territory

Pianist Hyun Joo Lee and flutist David Jerome Johnson

Featuring:
Clarion Chamber Ensemble
     David Jerome Johnson, flute
     Hyun Joo Lee, piano
     Jayson Rivera, clarinet
     Dino Decena, violin
     Gerry Gonzales, cello
     Joy Allan dela Cruz, viola
     Reynato Resurreccion, oboe
     Ariel Sta. Ana, clarinet
     Noel Singcuenco, bassoon
     Jay-Ar Mesa, horn
     Ma. Lica Uson, violin
     Glober Calambro, trumpet
     Rommel Cruz, double bass

Programme:
Paul Hindemith
     Septet 1948
Dmitri Shostakovich
Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8
Joseph Reinberger
Nonet in E flat major, Op. 139
Astor Piazzolla
     Verano porteño

The chamber music performances for 2015 kicked off as the Clarion Chamber Ensemble presented The Bold, The Brash and The Beautiful at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater).

The concert, hosted by Bert Robledo started with a bold statement from Paul Hindemith’s Septet 1948 that was played by flutist David Jerome Johnson, oboist Reynato Resurreccion, clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana, bassoonist Noel Singcuenco, horn player Jay-Ar Mesa, trumpeter Glober Calambro and bass clarinetist Jayson Rivera. The Hindemith piece was indeed an unusual and a bold choice for an opener as it was at times atonal and is curiously structured. The piece featured a musical palindrome in the second and fourth movement but it was almost impossible to figure that out in just the first listening. I wasn't surprised when some members of the audience didn't warm up to this opener at all.

But I really warmed up to the next one which was Dmitri Shostakovich's Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8 which was the brash portion of the concert. This single movement composition was played by pianist Hyun Joo Lee, violinist Dino Decena and cellist Gerry Gonzales. An early composition created when Shostakovich was still a student, this trio is varies in pace and mood greatly while sounding at times Romantic, Impressionistic and even cinematic. Although it had some of the grotesque that characterizes his latter works, the trio wasn't quite the brash Shostakovich music that caused him much trouble with the Soviet authorities. Honestly, I would've preferred if the ensemble chose to perform the darker and the more poignant second trio instead. But it still pleased me nonetheless to have seen a performance of any Shostakovich chamber music which is rarely performed here.

The ensemble left the 20th century atonal and dissonant harmonies of the first two pieces and stepped back in time to perform Joseph Rheinberger's Nonet in E flat major, Op. 139 with violinist Dino Decena, violist Joy Allan dela Cruz, cellist Gerry Gonzales, double bassist Rommel Cruz, flutist David Jerome Johnson, oboist Reynato Resurreccion, clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana, bassoonist Noel Singcuenco, and horn player Jay-Ar Mesa. The piece, composed by Rheinberger who is known for his works for the organ, is basically a four movement symphony for nine musicians. With more pleasant melodies, this was indeed the beautiful part of the concert. While the ensemble was playing, I remembered my horrible experience at the recent Pasinaya when they were playing the first movement of this piece and a toddler right behind me was making a lot of noise. Thank goodness that the toddler was not present during this concert and I was able to enjoy the performance of this piece without any incident.

For the finale, the entire ensemble (sans trumpeter Calambro) along with guest artists violinist Ma. Angelica Uson and saxophonist Jayson Rivera performed Astor Piazzolla’s Verano porteño. Showing flair and swagger with all the male musicians wearing hats (with Singcuenco wearing a graduate cap of all things), this piece combining the bold, the brash and the beautiful was definitely a crowd pleaser. During the performance, I immediately wondered if Piazzolla actually wrote an arrangement of this piece specifically for that configuration of instruments. I found out right after the concert from David Jerome Johnson that he actually had Francesco Venerucci a pianist and composer from Italy, do a special arrangement of this piece for the ensemble. And that Clarion Chamber Ensemble already availed of his arrangement services a handful of times before.

I initially didn't like chamber music since I prefer the grand music that was played by symphony orchestras. But as I got older, I learned to appreciate the more intimate works by composers that I like and eventually wondered if I would ever see a live performances of said pieces. Thank goodness that the Clarion Chamber Ensemble is here since 2001 and that they had made it their mission to do regular concerts featuring music that aren't regularly performed in here.

Nonet in E flat major, Op. 139

     Verano porteño

The Clarion Chamber Ensemble presents The Bold, The Brash and The Beautiful, its first concert of their 2015 season this March 22, 2015, 6:00 PM at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

Performing in this concert are flutist David Jerome Johnson, pianist Hyun Joo Lee, clarinetists Jayson Rivera and Ariel Sta. Ana, violinists Dino Decena and Ma. Lica Uson, cellist Gerry Gonzales, violist Joy Allan dela Cruz, oboist Reynato Resurreccion, bassoonist Noel Singcuenco, horn player Jay-Ar Mesa, trumpeter Glober Calambro, and double bassist Rommel Cruz. Mr. Bert Robledo will be the show’s master of ceremonies.

The concert will feature the works of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich and German composer Paul Hindemith whose present day reputations attest to their massive contribution to the bold and brash ideas of 20th century classical music. Clarion performs Shostakovich’s 1923 bold statement of youth, the Trio No. 1 in C minor Op. 8 (for piano, violin, and cello). From the pen of Paul Hindemith comes the brash electricity of his 1948 Septet for woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bass, bassoon, and horn) and trumpet and bass clarinet.

The beguiling beauty of the evening can be found in German organist/composer Joseph Rheinberger’s Nonet in E-flat Major Op. 139 for string trio, double bass and woodwind quintet, which surrenders its spirit to old world romantic charm in a vivid and imaginative Clarion performance. Clarion Chamber Ensemble performs the smoldering and lavish Verano porteño of Argentine Tango Master Astor Piazzolla. Verano porteño is also known as Summer from Piazzolla’s famous Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

The Bold, The Brash, and The Beautiful is a production by Clarion Chamber Ensemble and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and co-presented by 98.7 DZFE The Masters Touch.

The kaleidoscopic Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F, BWV 1047 of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and the festive Capriccio Espagnol of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) arranged for chamber ensemble, are the departure and final destination points on an itinerary that includes music from the Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 “Trout” of Franz Schubert (1797-1828), the Septet in B flat major, Op. 6 of Ludwig Thuille (1861-1907), the Piano Quintet of Antonio Molina (1894-1980), and the Elizabethan Songs of Dominick Argento (b. 1927).

Chamber Music in Progress takes its name from the chamber music program of the same name on 98.7 DZFE (Sunday 300 PM and Wednesday 800 PM) hosted by Clarion Music Ensemble co-founder and artistic director David Jerome Johnson. With pianist Hyun Joo Lee, flutist Johnson formed Clarion Chamber Ensemble in December 2001. It was joined by members of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra to create a core group of nine ensemble members. Other musicians collaborate with the ensemble as the music demands.

The strength of the Ensemble lies in the diversity and flexibility of instrumental combinations and repertoire that embraces 18th

Since it first went to air in 1954, DZFE has been a donor-supported non-profit and non-commercial outfit. DZFE’s unique blend of programs is designed to foster an appreciation for classical music and biblical precepts. The station is the only one of this format across the faith-based radio network, Far East Broadcasting Company, Philippines.

This year, DZFE will be relocating its transmitting facilities and studio to a site in Ortigas Center, where it will share a common facility with its sister station, 702 DZAS-AM, which is also set to move out of its current home in Valenzuela City. The new, compact Ortigas facility will require the updating of broadcast software and equipment, some of which has not been updated for decades. Fundraising for this initiative is intensive and ongoing. Donations for DZFE’s day-to-day operations and its relocation project will be accepted by station personnel at the venue.

Filfest's All-Chestra continues with pianist Rudolf Golez

Clarion Chamber Ensemble

Programme:

Franz Liszt Mephisto Waltz No. 1, S.514
Conradin Kreutzer Quintet in A major

After missing the previous FilFest All-Chestra concert featuring Wilfredo Pasamba because of prior commitments, I told myself that I’d be making an extra effort to catch the next one. And I do really want to see this since it features pianist Rudolf Golez who is also a friend. I’ve seen him perform numerous times as a soloist but I’ve yet to see him play with others like an orchestra or an ensemble. I’m also curious to see who among the Clarion Chamber Ensemble will be playing in this concert. I’ve seen some of them before as guest musicians during performances by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. So despite the great distance and the long traveling time, I’ll be off to Alabang to see this concert.
