Sponge Cola celebrates 13 years with Music Museum concert

July 19, 2013, 8:00 PM
Music Museum
Greenhills Shopping Center
San Juan

Featuring:
Sponge Cola
     Yael Yuzon, vocals
     Gosh Dilay, bass
     Armo Armovit, guitar
     Tedmark Cruz, drums

After 13 years together as a band, Sponge Cola, composed of members Yael Yuzon, Gosh Dilay, Armo Armovit and Tedmark Cruz, will mount their first ever major solo concert, entitled Maximum Capacity, this July 19, 2013, 8:00 PM at the Music Museum.

The band recently held a press conference at the Universal Records office and I learned that the songs to be performed in this concert will be limited only to material that the band has recorded. It will be a mix of old and new hits along with unreleased tracks that have become fan favorites. Yael even hinted that the first song that they will perform might be 22 since he thinks that it’s cool to start the concert with what was probably the track that long time Sponge Cola fans first heard when they listened to the band’s debut album.

Yael won’t be Yael if he didn’t have his fun. During the press conference, he narrated on how he wanted to have, of all things, a goat with him during the concert. He started imagining both he and the animal walking on treadmills and even sang a snippet of Makapiling Ka while bleating like a goat. He claimed that the concert’s director, Paolo Valenciano, considered that idea for a moment before sanity prevailed. Eventually, the goat was scrapped from the show but Paolo’s father, Gary V. and Zia Quizon will definitely be among the guest artists in the concert.

When asked why Karylle isn’t officially part of the show, Yael answered that she will be watching for sure and he might end up giving the microphone to her at one point. Tedmark also didn’t give a definite answer when asked if the band’s former drummer, Chris Cantada will be making an appearance at the concert as well.

I still remember watching the band live over at Radio Republic when they were the guests on the station’s Live at 2299 show. During that night I couldn’t contain my laughter with Yael’s antics in between songs. Live at 2299 was just an hour long program so I guess that the music and hilarity will be at maximum capacity at their major concert. It all happens this July 19, 2013, 8:00 PM at the Music Museum.

Sponge Cola's District Press Conference

Sponge Cola
Erwin Armovit, Tedmark Cruz, Yael Yuzon and Gosh Dilay

Just barely a year after releasing the Diamond selling album Araw Oras Tagpuan, vocalist Yael Yuzon, bassist Gosh Dilay, guitarist Erwin Armovit, and drummer Tedmark Cruz, collectively known as the pop-rock band Sponge Cola surprises everyone by coming out with an EP. This unexpected six track District, released by Universal Records, is the band’s first EP since the self titled one that they released independently when they were still starting out.

During the press conference at Universal Records, Yael said that with this release having lesser tracks, they had to be more upfront with the album. What’s really upfront is Tedmark’s presence now more felt by having elements of urban/hiphop figure prominently in the album with tracks like XGF and It’s About You Girl (XGF What She Said Remix). These two tracks along with upbeat Mahaba Pa ang Gabi and Pick Your Poison make District feel carefree even though Fireworks and Twelve do slow things down offering a change of pace. Yael was proud to say that this album features four languages: Filipino, English, Spanish and Portuguese although the Spanish words there were just silly, gibberish stuff.

The press conference also doubled as a post birthday celebration for Yael. And I decided to go a bit crazy captioning some of the photos that I've taken of Yael for the past months. He never fails to crack me up whenever I ask him to pose for photos.

Yael makes a wish for his birthday
I wish to have superpowers!
I wish that you fall in love with me!
Nah, I just wish to get some sleep

District features collaborations with Parokya ni Edgar’s Chito Miranda, Los Magno, Sitti and even an unexpected appearance by the band’s manager Saul Ulanday hidden somewhere in the album. The two videos that are already released also feature numerous cameo appearances like Anne Curtis for XGF and Annicka Dolonius, Jed Madela, Noel Cabangon, Diego Castillo of Sandwich, Teddy Corpuz of Rocksteddy and Tanya Markova for Mahaba Pa ang Gabi.

I was really surprised by the release of District since the Yael teased about this when Sponge Cola dropped by Radio Republic some months ago. I thought that they were coming up with a full length album and they really shook things up by coming up with an EP this time around. It would be interesting how things go on since they’ve already released two videos from the album.

District is available now in record stores nationwide. XGF and the rest of the tracks are also available at MyMusicStore Philippines.

Sponge Cola launches District EP at Eastwood

November 9, 2012, 7:00 PM
Eastwood Central Plaza
Quezon City

Sponge Cola may be one of the few artists who has achieved the very rare Diamond Record status. But they are not resting on their laurels as the band, composed of vocalist Yael Yuzon (vocals), Gosh Dilay (bass), Erwin Armovit (guitars) and Tedmark Cruz (drums), are set to launch District, their latest offering under Universal Records this November 9, 2012, 7:00 PM at the Eastwood Central Plaza.

Sponge Cola at Radio Republic's Live at 2299

So far, the only thing that I’ve heard from District is the single XGF featuring Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar and Los Magno. The single has topped the download charts over at MyMusicStore Philippines while the accompanying video featuring Anne Curtis has also topped the Pinoy MYX Countdown. Sponge Cola also collaborated with Sitti in this EP. The other tracks included in District which I still haven’t heard yet are Mahaba Pa ang Gabi, Fireworks, Pick Your Poison and Twelve.

Yael Yuzon

According to the press release, they called it District because according to Yael, “District represents a fraction of a bigger whole, which is like the EP compared to a full-length album. This is a short burst, a sprint rather than a long run. This is also our way of shaking things up.”

Sponge Cola really had a superb year so far with much lauded performances in the Du World Music Festival in Dubai and at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis. And with the release of District, they are poised to shake things further as the year comes to an end. It will be great to see Sponge Cola perform live once again since the last time I saw them perform was when they were guests at Radio Republic’s Live at 2299 program and that was already months ago.

The Diamond Record Award

The District launch will also feature performances from a couple of promising young bands in the country: Never The Strangers and She’s Only Sixteen. Limited edition Sponge Cola ballers and posters will be bundled with every purchase of District during the launch.

Sponge Cola to perform at the Beale Street Music Festival

Armo, Yael, Ted and Gosh of Sponge Cola

The Philippines is the country being honored in Memphis in May International Festival 2012. One of the highlights of this month long event is the Beale Street Music Festival happening on May 4-6, 2012. And since the festival is saluting the Philippines this year, it is only fitting that a Filipino band gets to shine on stage. And that privilege to perform in this music festival goes to no other than, Diamond selling pop-rock band Sponge Cola. A press conference was held recently at Shakey’s, Tomas Morato in line with the band’s upcoming high profile gig.

Band members Yael Yuzon, lead guitarist, Erwin Armovit, bassist Gosh Dilay and drummer Tedmark Cruz are geared for another milestone in their career as they take part in this festival alongside big name artists like Pitbull, Alisson Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, Evanescence, Megadeth, Herbie Hancock, Al Green and Little Richard (who replaces the injured Jerry Lee Lewis) just to name a few.

Yael Yuzon holds a copy of Araw Oras Tagpuan

Performing at the Horseshoe Stage on May 4 and 5, the band plans to play songs from their four studio albums (PalabasTransit and Sponge Cola, and Araw Oras Tagpuan) and also their debut EP. They also mentioned that they would be performing covers like an Eraserheads and an APO Hiking Society song during their sets which will last for about an hour. The turnout of the Filipino community will also decide the number of songs in Filipino that they will perform although Yael stressed that language isn’t a barrier when listening to music. Yael also added that he’ll be playing the keyboards (hearing this pleased me a lot) during the festival which is something that he doesn’t usually do normally. One thing that Yael does normally is to talk a lot (but still very amusing) and he wants to cut back on the spiels during the festival. He recalled a gig that went on for hours but they only played like 15 minutes worth of songs and some of them were just snippets at that since he actually talked more.

I do admit that it took me a while to warm up to Sponge Cola’s music but now, I’ve been seeing a lot more of Yael and the rest of the band. And this coming May 4-5 at the Horseshoe Stage, music fans who flock over to Memphis will finally get to see and hear why Sponge Cola has become one of the most popular, enduring and very fun bands in the country. And I couldn't be happier knowing that Filipino music (OPM) will be heard by a wider and diverse audience during the Beale Street Music Festival.

Faces of Pinoy Rock

I've never been a rocker. In fact, I’ve always liked to say that I am the typical classical music geek who usually gets beaten up by rock musicians. Well, I’ve never been beaten up by rockers but it’s just my way of saying that I’ve never been comfortable attending rock events. But a few months ago, the Embassy of Italy gave me my rock star moment and since then, I haven’t been as apprehensive as I was regarding rock events. Thankfully, their latest event was a fusion of rock music and visual art and not a full blown rock event so I had no problems going there. My knowledge about art specifically paintings are so minimal so I think that the exhibit Faces of Pinoy Rock by Nino Quartana (a Sicilian who has been based in Manila for five years) was another opportunity for me to learn more about visual art. And I’ve always liked seeing the people from the Italian Embassy and the Philippine-Italian Association since they’ve been so nice and kind to me.

Unfortunately, morning activities during this day finished a bit late and I wasn’t able to make it on time to see the formal opening of the exhibit at My Little Art Place. I missed the prepared programme, the speeches, the opening remarks, the messages and also Ambassador Fornari and Madame Silvana. But I still was able to make it and I arrived at the gallery already teeming with a good sized crowd. As I was making my way through the gallery and searching for people I know, I recognized Erwin Armovit aka Armo from the band Sponge Cola. And lo and behold, the rest of the band was also there.

Nino Quartana with Sponge Cola

It was only right then and there that I came to realize that Filipino rock musicians were the subjects of the paintings featured in the exhibit. I confess that I had no idea what the exhibit was all about coming in and I just went there since I was invited by the Italian Embassy. As expected, Sponge Cola was one of the artists/bands that had their portraits done. It was interesting to see that their painting, based on their Araw Oras Tagpuan CD cover, was done with bright aqua and hot pink colors reminding me of cotton candy. Based on my experience with the band during their Blogger’s Night, I can imagine lead singer Yael Yuzon eating cotton candy with delight especially now that the band recently got a Diamond Record certification.

Other artists/bands featured at the exhibit were Raimund Marasigan, Bamboo Mañalac, Arnel Pineda from Journey, Razorback, Wolfgang, Urbandub, Franco, Parokya ni Edgar, and Kamikazee. I was amazed to see how the works captured the character of the artists and bands like the playful and naughty nature of Kamikazee and Parokya ni Edgar. As an added experience, MP3 players were also attached to each of the paintings so that the viewers can hear the music of the artists while looking the art. And as I was examining the painting of Bamboo while listening to the music, I reminded myself that I need to get hold of a copy of his new CD as well.

Manila in the Night

Oddly, the one work that really spoke through me was part of an earlier series. The painting, entitled Manila in the Night, utilized volcanic ashes from Mayon volcano and it depicted a lone, colorful jeepney traversing an empty road while tall buildings stood in the background like sentinels. The juxtaposition of the quaint yet colorful and moving jeepney with the imposing yet immobile buildings really appealed to me and I kept looking at it throughout the afternoon/evening. If only I could afford it, I truly would be a happy camper.

I stayed at the gallery for a long time and enjoyed the food and drinks in the company of old friends and new acquaintances. And I also got the chance to know more about Nino and was quite surprised that he had a previous work based on the very popular Filipino axiom “Bahala na si Batman” which is what the locals say in times of helplessness and when a favorable resolution is in the hands of Batman, of all people. Nino, along with other people from the Italian Embassy (Isis, Giovanni and Antonio), some friends (Lorena and Patrick) and I still went out to have a bite and have some more drinks. And this was when we were able to discuss more about Italian music, literature and comics and also about the infamous Metro Manila traffic. Looking back, I guess that it served me well when I said to myself “bahala na si Batman” as well when I decided to go to the opening of this exhibit.

Nino, RAd and Isis

Faces of Pinoy Rock is a visual arts marketing promotion (vamp) project of GAPS, Inc. (Guia Acosta Publicity and Special projects) pioneering in the advocacy of arts, culture, education in cooperation with My Little Art Place and with the cultural participation of the Italian Embassy, the record companies and the artists’ management. The exhibit at My Little Art Place 222 Wilson St. Greenhills, San Juan runs until December 16, 2011. The gallery is open from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Sponge Cola Blogger’s Night

Ted, Gosh, Yael and Armo of Sponge Cola

After the tremendous success of their Tambay EP which reached the very elusive Diamond Record status through Coca-Cola’s summer promo and only the second band to do so after the Eraserheads, vocalist Yael Yuzon, lead guitarist Erwin Armovit, bassist Gosh Dilay and new permanent drummer Tedmark Cruz collectively known as Sponge Cola releases its fourth length album entitled Araw Oras Tagpuan under Universal Records.

I admit that I wasn’t crazy about the band when I first heard their cover of Madonna’s Crazy For You. But when I heard more of their original material via their previous releases Palabas, Transit and Sponge Cola, my initial impression was shattered and it was replaced with amusement and fondness for the band instead.

Currently enjoying the success of their latest single and video Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay, Sponge Cola held a Blogger’s Night at the Universal Records office in cooperation with Pinoy Magazine, BANDS Magazine and official online partner Orange Magazine TV.

Even before the proceedings started, Yael joined the early bloggers as they had their dinner. And right then and there, he socialized in a funny, accommodating and enthusiastic manner without any airs. I thought to myself that this is one rocker who doesn’t beat classical music geeks like me  which is what I like to say whenever I become intimidated by rockers.

And his jovial nature continued on during the actual Q & A portion of the event wherein he was joined in by the rest of the band. The loquacious Yael continuously tapped his fingers while spouting crazy ideas like wanting the band to be known as “the Nicholas Sparks of OPM” and yet confusing which novels were actually his. And while he also yearned to experiment more with the band like collaborating with Lea Salonga and aiming for a Broadway showtune sound, he went further out of the box when he also suggested his desire to play while frying an egg on stage.

Of course, the band talked a lot about the album Araw Oras Tagpuan and although while it sounds trite, the band said that the album was inspired by life. With the exception of She Weeps, a song that Yael wrote when he was still a teenager, the rest of the tracks were written based on how they are doing right now, picking up what they’ve been seeing as they go on with their lives. And it seems that they’ve been having the time with their lives with fun tracks like Tambay, Ok Dito and Warning which is a throwback to the Manila Sound with its distinct vibrato which some kids may find very amusing. And I won’t be talking about the hidden track since it is best heard or else I spoil the element of surprise which I think I already did.

As an added treat for everybody present, the band performed a short set which included the songs Regal, Tambay, Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay and Jeepney preceded by some measures of Kapag Tumibok ang Puso. Yael noted that it’s been a while since they performed in such an intimate setup (two guitars and the occasional tambourine) that he didn’t require a microphone to amplify his voice. And true to his nature, he said that he felt that it was a relaxed atmosphere and that he felt like lounging to the point that he almost put one of his legs on the table.
