PETA presents CONTROL+ SHIFT, new collection of plays on changing narratives

Whenever a new year starts, people make resolutions to forge new directions or change the narratives in their own lives. QUEZON CITY, Philippines – With an unwavering commitment to empowering and enriching society, PETA continues to push boundaries and explore new frontiers in the realm of socially relevant theater. PETA welcomes 2024 with a bold collection of new theater performances that puts the spotlight on the theme of narrative change with CONTROL + SHIFT : Changing Narratives, Reclaiming and Reshaping Stories of the Filipino People.

PETA artists, together with creative partners and collaborators, have created fresh works that hope to provoke curiosity, spark conversations, challenge assumptions, interrogate, and transform the toxic narratives and harmful depictions that hold society back.

CONTROL + SHIFT : Changing Narratives features eight new works, devised performances, and the re-staging of KUMPRONTASYON at the PETA Theater Center from January 12-14, 19-21, 2024.

The line-up includes:

Zoe Damag, Julia Enriquez, Pia Viola, and Gold Villar-Lim’s Momsilogues, directed by Gold Villar-Lim. Single mom foodie vloggers collaborate on an interactive vlog about tapsilog, uncovering a savory journey of career, love, and motherhood.

Sabrina Basillo’s Ang Mga Halimaw sa Compound Z, directed by Norbs Portales. A journalist interviews two recovering “halimaw” about their reintegration into society and discovers a shocking revelation that could alter humanity's destiny forever. This play explores the construction of monster myths and their impact on young Filipinos' mental and social well-being.

Albularyo, direction, concept, and choreography by Carlon Matobato, dramaturgy by Ian Segarra. A movement performance that journeys into the world of Filipino folk healing of the ills of our body and our nation.

Mixkaela Villalon’s Children of the Algo, directed by John Moran. Gen Z content creators hide their deeper realities while navigating the digital age with wit and vulnerability, challenging viewers to see beyond the algorithm.

Dominique La Victoria’s Kislap at Fuego, directed by Maribel Legarda and J-mee Katanyag, Filipino translation by Gentle Mapagu. An unexpected fairytale between a Kapre and a country girl, set amidst the Philippine Revolution against Spain. This play explores how to reshape the way we talk about love, rebirth, and revolution.

Liza Magtoto’s (/) (Slash), directed by Meann Espinosa. When an influencer’s best friend is “canceled,” her seemingly neutral stance is put to a test. As these two friends grapple with the idea of re-entering the industry, Xendy (the influencer) tries to balance loyalty, righteousness and branding.

Ang Parangal, direction & concept by Eric dela Cruz, adaptation & co-conceptualized with Michelle Ngu-Nario. In this adaptation of Miloš Forman’s 1967 comedy film, The Fireman’s Ball, a group of barangay tanod organizes a community celebration in tribute for their retired barangay captain but crumbles in the face of their dire ineptitude. Spectacles and good intentions are not enough to make up for incompetence in governance.

Glecy Atienza’s Nakatala Sa Tubig (Staged Reading), in collaboration with Anthony Cruz & Bobet Mendoza. A performance discourse on water and the lives and roles of women in times of war.

Kyle Saldonido’s Pilipinas, Geym Ka Na Ba? a devised performance by Umalohokan, Inc., directed by Kovi Billones with directing guidance from Ian Segarra. The residents of Barangay Pinapili woke up in an obscure playground. To leave, they must beat a series of childhood games, each with a dark twist.

Melvin Lee’s KUMPRONTASYON This production, which boasts three plays: Allan Palileo’s Lakambini, Guelan Luarca’s The Impossible Dream, and Joshua Lim So’s A Color for Tomorrow, uses theater as a platform for difficult but necessary conversations on unresolved historical and political events.

These shows hope to use the power of theater as a platform to reclaim spaces for collective meaning-making and social transformation. After all, changing the world can all begin with experimenting with a story, a frame, a narrative.

PETA's A Game of Trolls streams online

In celebration of its 55th Anniversary, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) brings back A Game of Trolls streaming online this April 22-23, 2022 through the ktx.ph website.

Directed by Maribel Legarda, written by Liza Magtoto with music & lyrics, by Vincent de Jesus, this musical about Martial Law premiered back in 2017 which seems like ages ago when one thinks of the pre-pandemic era. But it has remained relevant nowadays when troll armies ran amuck with history, specifically the Marcos regime, getting revised at a crucial time with just a few weeks left before the upcoming presidential elections.

A Game of Trolls is the story of a young man named Heck (Myke Salomon), who works as a keyboard warrior at a “troll center” that runs an online campaign in favor of martial law. At the same time, tensions rise between Heck and his mother (Upeng Galang-Fernandez), a former martial law activist who is trying to reach out to her son. All the while, ghosts of martial law victims creep out from the internet – ala A Christmas Carol – to haunt Heck, who is made to reevaluate his beliefs as he encounters them.

Along with Salomon and Galang Fernandez, the musical also features Gold Villar Lim, Vince Lim, Lemuel Silvestre, Joseph Madriaga, and Kiki Baento. Uncovering HIV misconceptions in PETA's Under My Skin

As the World AIDS Day approaches, the Philippines will be once again reminded of its other health crisis that has been seemingly brushed aside as all eyes are on the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the downward trend from the rest the world, the Philippines has seen a 21% increase in new infection brought about by the decrease in HIV prevention coverage and increase in treatment gap, according to 2021 data released by the Department of Health.

To further address this crisis, the Philippine Educational Theater Association is presenting its advocacy play, Rody Vera's Under My Skin, streaming online from November 26 to December 5, 2021 through the Ticket2me portal.

Directed by Melvin Lee, the streaming version of the play was shot on stage at the PETA Theater back in January 2021 when restrictions were eased allowing for shoots under strict guidelines. The play had its early February-March 2020 run at the PETA Theater abruptly cut when the Covid-19 lockdowns were imposed.

Under My Skin tells multiple stories of people coping with life with HIV in various ways mainly focusing on the tangled web of past and present lovers Jonathan (Mike Liwag), Greg (Gio Gahol), and Syd (Eko Baquial); Dino (Dylan Ray Talon) and his mother Aling Loida (Kitsi Pagaspas); and the disbelieving Mary Rose (She Maala). Their intersecting stories are bound together by Dr. Gemma Almonte (Cherry Pie Picache), an epidomologist who not only provides medical service to her patients but also dispenses information about HIV/AIDS to the audience, which in this case, are the online viewers.

Whenever Picache breaks the fourth wall, she uses her years working with cameras to maximum effect. As one feels that Dr. Almonte is directly addressing him or her, one cannot help but be glued to the screen and listen attentively as she drives her point home. And this she did effectively. Anyone who is still in the dark as to what HIV and AIDS is should listen to Dr. Almonte and be enlightened.

At the start, Dr. Almonte tells that because of the alarming rise in HIV cases here in the Philippines, it has become more likely that one knows someone who is infected with the virus unlike decades ago. And the play then gives a glimpse of the lives of these people, who are all too real, each with their own struggles stemming from their diagnosis. And this struggle extends to the people around them.

There is Jonathan. When he tests positive, his current partner Greg becomes hostile to him. It takes the firm resolve of Syd, Jonathan's former partner, to convince Greg to have a change of mind.

On the other hand, Aling Loida, has to ditch her superstitious beliefs and misconceptions when her teenage son, Dino, is diagnosed with HIV. She toughens up and shows a mother's unconditional love when she learns about the real and horrific circumstances that led to his son getting the virus.

Mary Rose's tale revolves upon the horrific discovery that she somehow passed on the virus to her young kid. This leads her to confront her husband, Louie (Bene Manaois) revealing a past indiscretion that fractures the family forever.

Along with these three major storylines are some vignettes that give more faces, and dimension to the people affected with HIV. Notable here is Dudz Teraña's "intermission" providing some comic relief amidst all of the drama but still reminding the viewer that this virus is no laughing matter.

Their tales serve as a reminder that what is deadlier than the virus is the stigma, fear, and ignorance. These keep those with HIV from facing their situation head on and instead only lead them to more destructive paths. But with the right information, along with the compassion and support from others, one can deal with the HIV purely as a medical matter and be on the road to better health. Knowledge about HIV/AIDS can lead to better decision making thus preventing further infections. There may still be no cure for HIV/AIDS, but it can still be treated. And no one has to die because of the virus.

Rody Vera's Under My Skin, presented by the Philippine Educational Theater Association along with advocacy organization partners LoveYourself PH and The Red Whistle, and major co-presenters UNILAB, Inc., and Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc., will stream online on November 26-28, and November 30-December 5, 2021.

Early in 2020, the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) Under My Skin has been constantly garnering critical acclaim for its honest and multifaceted approach in depicting people with HIV/AIDS onstage when its run, along with a handful of theater productions in the Metro, was abruptly halted when lockdowns were imposed due to the threat of the Covid-19 virus.

Fast forward to the final quarter of 2021, PETA and its partners, advocacy organizations The Red Whistle and LoveYourself, and major co-presenter UNILAB, Inc. announce the return of Under My Skin via online streaming from November 26-December 5, 2021 through the Ticket2me platform.

Unlike PETA’s most recent (and successful) online streaming of its megahit musical Rak of Aegis that showed a recorded live performance complete with an audience from its latest run, the upcoming Under My Skin online presentation will instead show a closed door performance at the PETA stage by the cast, led by award winning film and television actress Cherry Pie Picache, that was specifically filmed for online streaming.

Keeping the script by playwright Rody Vera intact, the filmed version will recreate the experience of watching the play inside the PETA Theater Center but with the added perspectives brought forth by the use of three different cameras as director Melvin Lee explained during the online media launch held recently.

Joining Cherry Pie Picache in this filmed performance are Eko Baquial, Gio Gahol, Mike Liwag, Jarred Jaicten, Kitsi Pagaspas, Dylan Ray Talon, Dudz Teraña, She Maala, Bene Manaois, Erold Enriquez, Jason Barcial, Joseph Madriaga, Rach Gimpes, Reggie Ondevilla, Roy Dahildahil, Gerard Dy, and Ekis Gimenez.

Available globally and with English subtitles, Under My Skin will run on November 26-28, and November 30-December 5, 2021.

PETA's Rak of Aegis finally streams online

When local theater companies started offering some of their productions online due to the pandemic shutting down productions worldwide, there was one production that was requested the most by theater aficionados in the country.

And due to this unrelenting demand, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) finally brings their hit musical Rak of Aegis online for a limited two weekend run on July 31-August 1, 2021 and August 7-8, 2021 via the Ticket2Me platform.

The online version, a recording of a live performance from the musical’s latest run, features several original cast members led by Aicelle Santos as the dreamer Aileen. Joining her are Philippine theater’s premiere couple, Robert Seña and Isay Alvarez who originated the role of Kiel and Mary Jane respectively. Two of the show’s breakout stars from the original run, Poppert Bernadas (Kenny) and Pepe Herrera (Tolits), will also be seen in the online stream.

Other cast members include Joann Co (Mercy), Jimi Marquez (Jewel), Gie Onida (Fernan) and ensemble members John Moran, Matel Patayon, Marynor Madamesila, Lemuel Silvestre, Teetin Villanueva, and Rafael Sudayan.

Bells and whistles (and more) in Rak of Aegis' 7th run

The last time I saw Philippines Educational Theater Association's (PETA) Rak of Aegis was way back during one of its earlier reruns, probably the third. After some years, I finally had the chance to catch it once again at the opening Gala Night presented by PLDT Home.

Time have passed and I thought that I've already forgotten what this musical is all about. In a nutshell, it's about Aileen, an optimistic young woman who dreams of making it viral online to help her parents who have been struggling financially ever since their barangay Venezia got submerged in flood months ago. And the audience gets to join the journey of Aileen and the rest of the residents of Venezia as they try to rise up above the waters while belting out tunes from the discography of the rock band Aegis.

As members of the original cast, led by Aicelle Santos as Aileen, Robert Seña as Kiel, Isay Alvarez-Seña as Mary Jane, and one of Rak's breakout stars Pepe Herrera as Tolits performed on stage, memories from years ago came flooding back as the show went on. I did notice that some of the jokes involving current trending topics had been updated to avoid being stale.

What surprised me very much with this latest viewing were bells and whistles that were either relatively new, or were simply not noticed by me before. Various stage effects like sunflowers and vines appearing onstage, actual rain, and the flood actually subsiding were upgrades that have raised further the production value of PETA's runaway hit. I learned later on that the flood subsiding was through a tube that pumped out the water from the stage. And this water is actually recycled and treated. So it's not like it's water down the drain for every performance which is insensitive in line with the recent water crisis.

The cast and the show were polished and spot on like clockwork but there were still some unexpected moments like an ensemble member slipping in the flood, enabling one to do a quick ad lib in reference to that mishap. Another of these moments was when Jewel's (Ron Alfonso) massive carnival head dress hit Aicelle in the face. This was definitely not in the script but it provided additional laughter. Such is the joy and thrill of live theater since it is very unlikely that this also happened in every performance.

The current run also welcomed new cast members including OPM legends Noel Cabangon, Jenine Desiderio, and Bayang Barrios, along with actor Derrick Monasterio and the newest Aileen, Kimberly Baluzo. They performed excerpts and answered a handful of questions from the press at a pre-performance showcase.

Seeing bits from these new cast members just made me want to catch some of their performances too before this run ends on September 29, 2019 at the PETA Theater Center.

OPM stars join 7th run of Rak of Aegis

In a move that surprised nobody, Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) megahit musical Rak of Aegis returns for a 7th run this July 5 - September 29, 2019 at the PETA Theater Center.

For this run, Rak welcomes a handful of the country's legendary recording artists to its ever growing cast as PETA partners the Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM), the PhilPop MusicFest Foundation (PhilPop), and PLDT Home Fibr.

Rak of Aegis and PhilPop are hardly strangers since back in July 2014, at the finals night of the 3rd PhilPop competition the cast of Rak of Aegis (then currently in its 2nd run) performed in a production number before the winners were announced. Fast forward five years later, the relationship has grown stronger. Rak's music director/arranger Myke Salomon join the PhilPop Songwriting Bootcamp sharing his expertise in composing musical theater.

Rak of Aegis Season 7 begins on July 5 running up to September 29, with shows from Thursday to Sunday at the PETA Theater Center.
