Netizens’ Choice Awards for the Bloggers’ Choice for Most Favorite TV Station

When I was asked to participate at the Netizens’ Choice Awards to write my entry for the Bloggers’ Choice for Most Favorite TV Station, I was faced with a dilemma. I rarely watch television and I don’t really care much about the so called “network wars”. My television viewing habit is definitely a whole lot different from the average Filipino viewer. I was really scrambling to find some answers until I realized that I do find myself watching a certain network which is GMA News TV. At first glance, this choice being my favorite since like it was a decision by default. But come to think of it, there has to be a reason why I always normally end up watching GMA News TV.

The main reason why I watch television is to catch the local news. And GMA News TV airs newscasts regularly almost round the clock. And they do have regular news updates as well. Aside from the news, the public affairs programs that they have like the Investigative Documentaries offer informative and engaging topics that leave me feeling like I’ve learned more after watching the show. The lifestyle, entertainment and sports programs of the network also follow the same vein. I have often complained that a lot of other local entertainment shows only serve to kill my brain cells but the programs at GMA News TV do otherwise. They entertain without pandering to the lowest common denominator. Proof of that is their celebrity oriented show Follow That Star which doesn’t cater to mindless gossips and instead offers a glimpse to the lives of celebrities.

I do appreciate that the programs over at GMA News TV are very accessible. I don’t need to have watched previous episodes of shows like Pop Talk or Motorcycle Diaries to appreciate the current episodes that I happen to have the chance to watch. I can just switch on to the channel and see whatever is on whenever I find a spare moment to watch television. Each episode is self contained and yet they leave me with wanting to check out what they have to offer for next week.

One more thing that I appreciate a lot about GMA News TV is that they state what time the shows will be on and they do start on time. The only breaks in schedule occur when breaking news happen. I think that this is very important since Filipinos are infamous for their tardiness and basically a lack of respect for time. Having television programs starting on time is a great way in instilling the value of honoring time to the general public.

To sum it up, regular newscasts, accessibility of programs and a respect for time are the main reasons why I choose GMA News TV as my Bloggers’ Choice for the Most Favorite TV Station.  The Netizens’ Choice Awards is conducted by Showbiznest, Starmometer and LionhearTV and will not be possible without the support of Smart Communications, Inc. and DMCI Homes.

ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra presents A Christmas Gift

December 16, 2012, 2:00 & 6:00 PM
Rockwell Tent
Rockwell Drive cor. Estrella Street
Rockwell Center, Makati

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra gives A Christmas Gift this holiday season as they perform at the Rockwell Tent on December 16, 2012. Joining the orchestra and conductor Gerard Salonga in this special event are guests Xian Lim and K-La Rivera.

RAd and Xian Lim

Actor Xian Lim will be showcasing his piano and trombone playing skills in this concert. I met him during the opening of Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now 2012 and asked him which pieces he was going to play. He said that it would be surprise but I was able to find out from other sources that he will be playing a very popular Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart piece on the piano. An orchestra member already told me about his “beautiful butterfly fingers” during rehearsals.

K-La Rivera and RAd

K-La Rivera on the other hand will be the guest singer for this occasion. This performance comes of the heels of her recently concluded stint as Princess Jasmine in Atlantis Productions’ successful staging of Disney’s Aladdin The New Stage Musical. Unfortunately, I missed watching this production and I heard so many good things about her performance. I guess that watching her at this concert will make up for it.

Gerard Salonga and RAd

A Christmas Gift is a free show and tickets for the 2:00 PM show can be availed by checking out the Facebook and Twitter pages of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and Power Plant Mall.

I will never be able to forget this!

Legacy and Lessons of the Holocaust

A few weeks ago, I’ve had the pleasure of being invited to a reception for Dr. Racelle Weiman of the Dialogue Institute at the Temple University in Philadelphia. This event, entitled The Legacy and Lessons of the Holocaust held at the Palm Grove at Rockwell was hosted by the Embassy of Israel and the Honorary Consular-General of Sweden. And there was a special significance for this occasion considering the tension happening at the Gaza strip during that time.

During the event, Dr. Weiman presented certain individuals who stood up, embraced the Jews and offered a safe haven for them during the time of the Nazi regime in Europe. One of them was President Manuel Quezon. For many Filipinos, history defines Pres. Quezon as the President of the Commonwealth. But not known to many is the fact that he opened the doors to fleeing Jews and provided them a safe place. And these efforts were only interrupted when World War II broke out. Other personalities that Dr. Weiman highlighted were Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who also saved tens of thousands of Jews and Jorge Bocobo, the President of the University of the Philippines who rallied to urge Filipinos to welcome Jews in the country. People tend to remember Hitler, the Nazis and the number of Jews who were killed. But it’s also important to know the people who managed to save the Jews during this time.

Nini Avanceña and Dr. Racelle Weiman

Dr. Weiman then offered suggestions like trying to figure out what happened to the descendants of the Freider brothers, who made the request to be sheltered here. She wondered. She also suggested having a Philippine counterpart of the Open Doors Monument at the municipality of Rishon L’zion in Israel. This monument was erected to remember the close relations between the Philippines and Israel but there’s not a similar monument or structure here in the Philippines to remind the Filipinos of this relationship.

The presentation didn’t serve to judge or condemn anyone but rather emphasize the goodness in humanity regardless of culture, race or nationality. And this made this event very relevant going beyond Philippine-Israel relations and applicable also to other aspects of life.

Former First Lady, Rep. Imelda Marcos, several foreign dignitaries, government officials, members of the Jewish community and also descendants of Pres. Manuel Quezon led by his daughter Nini Avanceña were present during the reception. I’d like to thank the Embassy of Israel especially Yaniv Revach for inviting me to this enlightening evening that further strengthened the friendship between the Philippines and Israel.
