Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak returns to the Philippines for a special concert with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra on March 13, 2013, 8:00 PM at the Philam Life Auditorium. Almost a year after her successful rendition of Johannes Brahms’ first piano concerto during PPO’s Ochanine Conducts The Rite of Spring, Gulyak will now complete the Brahms’ piano concerto cycle as she takes on the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 83.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

This upcoming concert, entitled Elegantly Brahms also features Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98. PPO principal conductor and music director Olivier Ochanine will lead the orchestra during this evening.

This will be the fourth time that Sofya Gulyak, the 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition winner, will be performing in the country. Her first was a solo concert at the Philam Life Auditorium, then her first concert with the PPO, and lastly, a solo concert featuring an all-Russian programme. And I was fortunate to be able to see these three previous performances.

Conductor Olivier Ochanine

It is interesting to note that Brahms’ second piano concerto was composed 22 years after his first while the fourth symphony was completed just a year after the third. Most people associate Brahms with a lullaby but the two pieces of music to be performed in this concert will definitely make people look at Brahms in a totally different light.
