August 10, 2013, 8:00 PM
Francisco Santiago Hall
South Tower, BDO Corporate Center
Makati

Featuring:
Diomedes Saraza Jr., violin
Manila Symphony Orchestra
Arturo Molina, conductor

Programme:
Antonín Dvořák Carnival Concert Overture, Op. 92, B. 169
Béla Bartók Violin Concerto No. 2, BB 117
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36

The recent concert of violinist Diomedes Saraza Jr. at the Cultural Center of the Philippines was truly a noteworthy event. Somehow, I felt that the concert lacked something else: a concerto. I really did feel that after his performance of the Kreutzer Sonata, there would be another interval wherein the orchestra would set up in preparation for the upcoming concerto. But the concert only featured Saraza Jr. and his collaborating pianist Greg Zuniega. And now, what I’d like to believe to be the second part of his concert (and a lot more) comes just a few weeks later when he joins conductor Arturo Molina and the Manila Symphony Orchestra in Spectacle, the third concert in the orchestra’s Color Your World 2013-2014 Concert Season. This performance will be held on August 10, 2013, 8:00 PM at the Santiago Francisco Hall at the BDO Corporate Center in Makati.

Violinist Diomedes Saraza Jr.

Diomedes will perform in this concert the rarely played and technically demanding Violin Concerto No. 2, BB 117 by Béla Bartók. Some people may be turned off by the mere mention of Bartók, but they will certainly not be turned off by the other pieces to be performed during this evening: Antonín Dvořák’s Carnival Concert Overture, Op. 92, B. 169 and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. These two pieces along with Diomedes’ performance of the Bartók concerto are key ingredients for a spectacular night of music

Conductor Arturo Molina

Aside from the violin concerto, it is the Tchaikovsky Symphony that I am really looking forward to. His fourth symphony was composed at a time of personal crisis. And it amazes me that it was during these turbulent times that Tchaikovsky was able to produce a lot of his masterpieces and this particular symphony is one of them. One has to look out for the fate theme that is signaled by the opening brass section and also the peculiar pizzicato strings of the third movement.
