Watching La Traviata three times with two of those nights featuring the Korean leads compared to only one night featuring the Filipino leads only gave me a clamor to see more of my countrymen perform. Thankfully, I’ll be able to see and hear more of Rachelle Gerodias when she performs arias and kundimans with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra this March 16, 2012, 8:00 PM at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater). The PPO returns to the CCP after detour to the Philam Life Auditorium at their last season concert. Principal conductor and music director Olivier Ochanine also resumes conducting duties in this concert that includes Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 in E flat major also dubbed as Romantic.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra

Previous announcements didn’t specify which arias and kundimans will be performed but I’ve always hoped that there would be something by Puccini. And I did get my wish with the inclusion of Sì, mi chiamano Mimì from La Bohème. She will also perform Hello, Hello from the Telephone by Gian Carlo Menotti. I still remember Rachelle Gerodias getting teary eyed during the La Traviata press conference when she said that she prefers kundiman over opera. That really piqued my interest and if she was that emotional talking about kundimans, I would love to see her performing the actual thing itself. And for this evening, she will perform the kundimans Nasaan Ka Irog by Nicanor Abelardo, Iyo Kailan Pa Man by Angel Pena and Lulay by Lucio San Pedro.

There is only one purely orchestral work in this evening and it’s a major one. Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 in E flat major will be a test of patience and endurance for a lof of the uninitiated. I’ve been trying to get myself accustomed to the piece prior to the actual concert and I’ve already developed a liking to the first movement especially the captivating theme played by the horn at the very beginning. I think that the horns and the rest of the brass section in this piece is noteworthy and something to look forward to. I just hope that the hiccups that the brass section has encountered in past performances will be remedied during this performance.
