The movie Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros/The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros released at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival back in 2005 signaled the blossoming of indie films in the Philippines. Now, the coming-of-age story about Maxie will blossom on the stage as it will be retold through a musical presented Bit by Bit Company, in cooperation with the PETA Theater Center and the Cultural Center of the Philippines happening this November 9, 2013 up to December 8, 2013 at the PETA Theater Center.

Based on the original screenplay by Michiko Yamamoto, Maxie The Musicale: Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros features book and lyrics by Nicolas B. Pichay, music by the team of William Elvin Manzano, JJ Pimpinio, and Janine Santos, and direction and choreography by Dexter M. Santos.

During the press launch held at BED Manila, Nicolas Pichay said that Maxie The Musicale: Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is the movie, but is not the movie. The movie tells the tale of Maxie, a gay teenager whose blossoming love for law abiding policeman Victor posed a major problem with his family made up of crooks. I haven’t seen the original film released during the Cinemalaya back in 2005 so I just have to take his word for it when I see the musical (and hopefully, also the film) myself.

But I was able to see a few numbers that the cast performed during the launch that gave me a clear idea on how the music would be like for this musical. I can definitely say that the music is very Filipino with songs that sound like the ones blaring loudly in jeepneys in the streets and also those played by local radio stations that no one will ever admit to listening to it. The music encompasses several genres like rock, kundiman and of course, a gay teenager like Maxie must have a torch song to be belted out like a diva. And it pleased me a lot when I learned that this production will feature a five piece band composed of William Elvin Manzano and Rigil Borromeo on the guitars, Van Quiaong with the keyboards, Allen Mamaid on the bass, and Jonah Ruiz at the drums.

The cast of Maxie The Musicale: Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is led by Jayvhot Galang who plays the title role of Maximo Oliveros and Jojo Riguerra as Victor Perez, Maxie’s object of affection. Joining them are Roeder Camañag and Nazer Salcedo who alternate as Paco Oliveros, Al Gatmaitan and OJ Mariano alternating as Boy Oliveros, and Jay Gonzaga as Bogs Oliveros. Maxie’s friends are played by Aaron Ching (Nar), Nomer Limatog, Jr. (Leslie), Teetin Villanueva (Monique), Eo De Guzman and Merdin Mojica (alternating as Peter), and Greg de Leon (Chief Dominguez). Rounding up the cast is the ensemble composed of Ruth Alferez, John Paul Basco, Jules Dela Paz, Irene Delarmente, Elliot Eustacio, Karyl Factora, Jim Andrew Ferrer, Francelle Fetalvero, Al Bernard Garcia, Jeffrey Hernandez, Ronah Rostata, and Christian Velarde.
