Looking
back in January of this year, I was very fortunate to be able to see Katy! when it was
first staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The show had a very
successful, sold out run and many people, who wanted to watch the show, ended
up getting disappointed since tickets were already hard to come by. Now, Spotlight Artists Centre brings
back Katy! for the second time this July 26-August 4, 2013 to be held now at
the Meralco Theater. This venue is bigger which means that it can accommodate more people.
Aside from the venue that has gotten bigger, the show promises to be also bigger and better this time. The production team has taken into consideration the feedback (mostly positive) that they got during the previous run. The rerun will bring in more chorus members to fortify the cast which is led by Isay Alvarez who plays the title role of Katy de la Cruz. Tirso Cruz III, Dulce, Lou
Veloso, Epy Quizon, Gian Magdangal and Aicelle Santos are the featured
performers who are returning for the second run. Astarte Abraham, Andy Bais,
Sheng Belmonte, Poppert Bernadas, Jeyvi Castillo, Aaron Ching, Lito
Cipriano, China Cojuangco, Gimbey de la Cruz, Enteng Evangelista,
Celine Beatrice Fabie, Sheely Gener, Noemi Gonzalez, Christine Joy Mangahis, and
Carlon Matobato round up the cast members.
Katy!
tells the story of Katy de la Cruz, dubbed as the Queen of Bodabil and the
highest paid singer in the country back then. This musical, with libretto by
Jose Javier Reyes and music by Ryan Cayabyab, recounts Katy’s childhood, her love
story, and her triumphs and disappointments both on and off the stage. And
throughout the show, there will be musical numbers that will not only make the audience
nod their heads and tap their feet, but will also make them shed some tears. My blog entry when I first saw Katy! can be
read in here.
I’ve
asked chorus member Poppert recently how dance rehearsals have been going and
he responded that compared to the previous run, the dancing will be a lot
cleaner and a lot tighter this time around. He, along with the rest of the Ryan Cayabyab Singers, also strongly suggest that people watch, specifically, the August 3, 2013 , 3:00 PM show. Ryan Cayabyab will be gracing the show and
people can have their tickets and souvenirs signed by him. Tickets for this
show can be bought at the Music School of Ryan Cayabyab located at the basement
of Robinson’s Galleria and by calling these numbers, 914-5055, 637-9840, (0917)
909-6484 and ask for Melissa.
The
creative team of the second run of Katy! remains the same as well with Nestor
Torre directing, and musical director leading the AMP Nonet Band in all of the performances.
Katy! is a licensed property of Actors Studio East Production Inc.
