Cine Europa 17 films center on family

September 11-21, 2014
Shang Cineplex (Cinema 2), Shangri-La Plaza
Mandaluyong

For some generations now, the size of a family has been shrinking drastically. But the Cine Europa family, now on its 17th year, continues to grow and expand as it screens 23 films from 17 countries in 9 cities with its Manila leg starting on September 11, 2014 at the Shang Cineplex.

A diverse set of films will be screened this year including Austria’s Zweisitzrakete/Two-Seater-Rocket, Belgium’s Iedereen Beroemd!/Everybody Famous, Bulgaria’s Patuvane kam Yerusalim/Journey to Jerusalem, Czech Republic’s Občanský průkaz/Identity Card, Denmark’s Jagten/The Hunt, France’s Casse-Tete Chinoise/Chinese Puzzle, Germany’s Scherbenpark/Broken Glass Park and Die andere Heimat/Home from Home, Hungary’s Tüskevár/Thorn Castle, Italy’s Una sconfinata giovinezza/A Second Childhood and Scialla!/Easy!, The Netherlands’ Bon Voyage and Mees Kees/Mister Twister - Class of Fun, Norway’s Vegas, Romania’s Pozitia copilului/Child’s Pose, Slovakia’s Lóve, Spain’s Una Pistola en cada mano/A Gun in Each Hand and El lince perdido/The Missing Lynx, Sweden’s Isdraken/The Ice Dragon, Switzerland and France’s Planet Ocean, and United Kingdom’s Metro Manila.

The film festival’s educational component is also expanding this year by having sessions held at the University of San Carlos, Cebu on October 10, 2014. The Manila leg of the educational component of the festival includes panel discussions with film producer and educator Almberg Ang on September 12, 2014, 11:00 AM and a forum for Filipino filmmakers with the European Union’s cultural officers from Spain, Italy, and France on September 20, 2014, 1:00 PM. Both sessions will be followed by screenings of Filipino films that were recognized in film festivals in Europe including Magnifico and Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros on September 12, 2014 and Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan on September 20, 2014.

During the Cine Europa 17 press conference held at the Premier Cinema of the Shang Cineplex, the Italian film Scialla!/Easy! was screened giving the members of the press a taste of how European families are despite the changing of the times.

Scialla!/Easy!

Released back in 2011, Scialla!/Easy! directed by Francesco Bruni is about a washed out author/professor Bruno Beltrame (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) who now ghost writes celebrity biographies while tutoring on the side. One of the kids he tutors is the rebellious and irreverent 15 year old Luca (Filippo Scicchitano, in his acting debut). Their tutor/student relationship takes a very interesting turn when Luca’s mother tells Bruno that Luca is his son. And that she is leaving Luca to stay with him and for him to take care of while she goes to work abroad in Mali. With the two living together, it’s only a matter of time that Bruno and Luca get to their senses, put their lives back on track, and reconnect with each other as father and son.

Possibly, the film’s main highlight for me is the soundtrack that featured music by rap artist Amir Issaa. He, along with producers the Ceasars contributed a handful of tracks in the film. It amused me that while Luca listened to a lot of hip hop in the film, Tina (Barbora Bobulova), an ex-porn star and pornographic films producer now whom Bruno is writing a biography for, listens and plays classical music by Chopin and Debussy. One of the things that I didn’t like about the film though was how Bruno and Luca got away from trouble so easily because of a stroke of good luck. Yes, it did pave the way for Luca to start taking things seriously but it felt too convenient for me. But it is still an enjoyable, feel good comedy that ultimately gave me an idea on how Italian hip hop music sounded like.

Actor Fabrizio Bentivoglio from Scialla!/Easy! can also be seen in Una sconfinata giovinezza/A Second Childhood, Italy’s second film entry to the Cine Europa 17.
