Filipino soloists take center stage in PPO’s 32nd Concert Season

Filipino soloists dominate the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s upcoming 32nd concert season entitled Sound Kaleidoscope opening this September 12, 2014, 8:00 PM at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo.

Overseas based Filipinos like pianist Albert Tiu and Rowena Arrieta, trumpeter Rommel Reyes, along with a homegrown quartet of PPO members composed of oboist Reynato Resurrecion Jr., clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana, bassoonist Adolfo Mendoza, and horn player Jay-ar Mesa make up this season’s roster of featured soloists. The only non-Filipino soloist will be Singapore based Australian cellist Pei-Sian Ng.

Conductor Olivier Ochanine

Taking to the podium along with the PPO’s principal conductor and music director Olivier Ochanine, and associate conductor Herminigildo Ranera for this season are guest conductors Jeffery Meyer and Yoshikazu Fukumura, both of whom had previous stints with the orchestra.

Among the highlights for this season are three Haydn symphonies (numbers 82, 97 and 100) lined up as well as popular favorites like Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and Igor Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. Audiences will also get to hear works by contemporary composers Steven Stucky and Arvo Part as well.

When asked why the upcoming concert season is dubbed as Sound Kaleidoscope, Ochanine responded that for him, it is always a different experience every time he listens to music even if it’s exactly the same piece of music. It is just like peering into a kaleidoscope will always yield a different view even if it’s the same kaleidoscope. He cited as an example the second movement march of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 which felt so different to him if he listens to it now compared to when he listened to it years ago.
