Richard Yap |
Once upon a time, Richard Yap imagined himself as a lounge singer and not as an actor that he is right now thanks to his breakthrough role as Papa Chen in the tv series My Binondo Girl. His current series, the popular Be Careful with My Heart which also gave rise to his new moniker as Sir Chief, gave people a sampler of his singing when he recorded the track Please Be Careful with My Heart for the series’ soundtrack. And now, Richard Yap aka Papa Chen and Sir Chief, is out to conquer not just bars and lounges but possibly bigger stages as he releases his self titled debut album under Star Records.
Richard’s
previous music experience prior to this album was just by being a member
of his high school choir and also of a band. The first time that he was able to
showcase his singing for a larger audience after rising to fame was when he was asked to present a song
number in one of the mall shows for My
Binondo Girl. I can only imagine that that really went well since Star Records got him inside the recording studio and now has come up with an 11 track album.
Led
by the single Don’t Know What to Do,
the album is a collection of easy listening tracks and mellow ballads mostly
from decades back. When asked which was his favorite among those he has recorded, Richard answered Promise Ain’t Enough which was
originally recorded by Hall & Oates. He explained that it’s not a really
popular song, but this was one that he personally wanted to include in the
album.
Overall album
producer Rox Santos said that they want listeners (the female ones, I reckon)
to feel like they are being serenaded by Richard Yap whenever they play the songs. He also explained that
the Mandarin version of Oh Babe was
included in the album in order to tap into the Chinese community. The inclusion
of this Singsing original got me personally intrigued since the song's composer,
Renato Santos, is my uncle and it’s always a big deal in the family whenever
someone decides to record a cover of this song. And to have Richard include this song in his album but with a twist, got the whole family excited and curious.
During
the press conference held at Palacio de Manila, Richard did perform the lead
single Don’t Know What to Do live. Yes, he can carry a tune but I don’t think that his voice is going to
change the landscape of the Philippine recording industry. But I do think that
for Richard’s legions of fans ranging from teenage girls up to their grandmothers, his
album is a perfect and inexpensive way for them who want to have a piece of Richard Yap home.
Richard
Yap’s self titled debut album, released by Star Records is now available in
record bars nationwide. Don’t Know What
to Do and the rest of the tracks are also available in digital formats over
at MyMusicStore Philippines ,
