theater is off to a good start this 2013 as actress-singer Isay Alvarez ushers
in the revival staging of Katy happening this January 17-27 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’
Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. This Spotlight Artists Centre’s production is based
on the life of Bodabil Queen Katy de la Cruz who was once the highest paid
singer in the country back in the day. Alvarez, an original cast member of Miss
Saigon, is joined in this production by Tirso Cruz III, Dulce, Lou Veloso, Gian
Magdangal, Tricia Amper-Jimenez and Epy Quizon.
The iconic musical Katy, first staged back in the 80’s features the music of Ryan Cayabyab and the libretto of Jose Javier Reyes. Minsan ang Minahal ay Ako and Ang
Entablado ay Mundo are just a couple of the songs that came out of this
musical. I was still way too young when this musical was first staged and I am thrilled
that the revival has come at a time when I am old and mature enough to fully
appreciate the material. What has got me really pumped up for this was knowing
that music director Mel Villena along with his AMP Big Band will be providing
live music accompaniment throughout the musical’s run. Nestor Torre directs
this production.
